Following up on my earlier requests for info on upgrading a pentium-based
Multia. This is preliminary information.
Using latest BIOS V4.05.7, a PowerLeap Pl-ProMMX/400, with AMD K6-2 CPU at
400 MHz, seems to work fine. Two caveats: Powerleap has a new very low
profile cooling setup that is mandatory if you don't want to perform case
surgery; you have to specify it when ordering it as the high profile unit
is still "stock". Second is that you need to relocate the speaker (I lost
the name of the person who provided me that info, but thanks!) because the
large capacitors on the adapter card would hit it when the logic board was
slid all the way into the case. BIOS reports the processor as a 133MHz
pentium, the Powerleap control panel works properly.
This is preliminary for one main reason; I was running the powerleap
power supply from an external disk cabinet. It requires a standard
disk plug for power, which the Multia does not have. I need to make
an adapter to go from the 4-pin motherboard header used for a 3.5"
drive to a standard plug, putting all the load on the Multia supply
before I will know if it can carry the load. I also have not tested it
with the lid on; it looks like there will be enough clearance over the
cooling fan without any case butchery, but I'll run it closed with the
thermostat program active running Seti or equally nasty compute program
to see if vent holes need to be drilled for more air intake. Still
a lot less obtrusive than a big square hole with the fan sticking out.
Using external power, it booted and ran NT4.0sp5 for about 1 hour with
no issues, and came up properly for three successive reboots while
testing processor options. No benchmarks yet but it is noticeably
quicker all around.
Thanks to those who responded here and in email. I'll post a followup
after I get the adapter cable made and complete testing. I never
wanted to have an intel box on my desk... sigh... but at least this
one says Digital on it and has an AMD in it.
