As I said I bought them for 125$CAN instead of 200$CAN, so it seemed like the perfect deal. My HD320`s (100$ when I bought them 4 years ago) headband is somewhat broken, so I thought I`d buy a new pair. 320`s gave me great sound trough all uses (portable cd, minisystem, computer), so I decided to stick with Sennheiser. It was probably to be expected, but none of that equipment could drive those headphones properly. I had bought the best Sony portable (DE-J915) to go with it and got tons of distortion since I had to push the volume to 10 to hear anything. Actually my old Panasonic portable did a way better job, but I still wasn`t impressed by the sound. Tried it on a friend`s decent separate`s system, and the sound was certainly not impressive at all. Bass wasn`t strong enough with Techno music, detail in high and midrange was not as good with classical or jazz as my 320`s were...
Maybe these high-quality headphones need a break-in period so their real qualities are revealed, but since I didn`t want to spend 125$ on something so unimpressive I brought them back to the store, end of story.
Now I think I`ll go look for Grado`s cans.

I tried these in a number of stores with lots of different equipment, trying to see if they could present a cheap, fast alternative to buying a pair of HD600's over the 'net.
In short, I thought they were really lacking. Big boomy bass, sizzly highs... blech. On some decent equipment nonetheless. The little $100 Sony headphones sounded better overall than the 570's (albeit still lacking a lot)
I've not heard the 580's or 600's so I cannot make a comparison. I just hope they are a league above the 570.
Please audition these before you buy them -- you might find you like them. They just didn't blow wind up *my* skirt at all.

I've purchased a pair of HD570s a couple of days ago. Overall impression at the store was pretty favourable. These headphones' sound seemed to be detailed & accurate. They also were nicely built & felt pretty comfortable. I was not quite sure about the treble performance though.
At home I've listened to some of my favourite recordings (baroque music, solo piano & guitar, blues, hard rock) & I was quite disappointed. The treble levels produced by the phones were, IMO, too high & sometimes the sound brightness was hardly bearable. I've returned HD570s & purchased a pair of HD565s instead at a different store (those were on sale!!!). The 565s perform a whole lot better in every music genre reproduction. The two simply don't even come close. In general, the 570s are OK for classical music listeners, but I would not recommend them for rock fans...

just got these today and will probably return them. although the overall sound is a drastic improvement over my $20 sonys, there is just too much bass. even with little bass info registering on the eq display, it's still "boom boom boom!" "symphony" and "natural sound" are used to advertise these, but all that extra heavy bass doesn't seem natural to me. and no, I'm not just used to the thin sonys. and no, it isn't what I have it connected to. Sennheiser refers to classical music a lot in their info for the 500/600 series. I don't understand this. nor do I understand recommending certain speakers for a particular kind of music. if a speaker/headphone sounds good for one type of music and a different sp./hdpn. "sounds" better for another type, then neither have "natural" sound. their only function should be to faithfully reproduce whatever kind of music they're being fed. maybe I'll try the HD600s, huh?
