MXM Upgrade Acer Aspire 7720G

Ik heb een Acer Aspire 7720G overgenomen waarvan de grafische kaart kapot was. De grafische kaart heb ik vervangen door een nVidia GeForce 9600M GT (DDR2). De laptop zou die kaart aan moeten kunnen.

De harde schijf was ook defect, dus het originele besturingssysteem heb ik niet meer.

De laptop gaat wel aan, maar ik krijg nog steeds geen beeld. Nu moet ik de bios waarschijnlijk updaten; maar alle methoden die ik tot nu toe heb gevonden werken niet.

Wat ik gedaan heb is:

(1) bootable cd gemaakt met daarop de inhoud van de meest recente bios (1.45).
Hiervoor heb ik deze methode gebruikt: klikkerdeklik.

Please note, This is known as a "BLIND FLASH" and is difficult to do with no screen working.

The procedure is as follows:

1 - Download the latest (or the version you are after) from the Acer website. (once you have gained access to a computer)

2 - Extract the files from the archive that are for the dos update. (for version 1.34 for Acer Aspire 7720 ONLY, file is called CL50134A)

3 - Next, write a small autoexec.bat file using notepad containing "ip50.bat". Make sure you save it as "autoexec.bat" and not as ".txt"

4 - Using nero express (or any cdr program that can create bootable cd's) and start a new project to make a bootable disc.

5 - Put all the files from the bios archive (as explained in no3) and the autoexec.bat into the root of the new disc

6 - click "burn disc" and use the native boot image within nero. I used english US Boot Locale.

7 - Finalise the disc.

8 - Put disc in affected Laptop. (Remember, this will only work if your laptop will switch on, fan noise, lights etc.)

9 - Switch off Laptop and remove battery and AC/DC Power cable.

10 - Whilst holding down "Fn + Esc", plug in the power cable, and switch on the laptop but dont let go of the keys yet.

11 - disc will begin to spin, fans will come on full speed, but no lights.
Release the buttons, wait a couple of seconds and press the buttons "Fn + Esc" again breifly, then wait for a good 5 - 10 mins.

12 - The laptop should shut down by itself, then once you switch it back on, it should recover itself and boot normally.

(Wel heb ik in het autoexec.bat bestandje if50.bat gezet; zo heet het bestandje namelijk bij versie 1.45; waar deze bij 1.34 kennelijk ip50.bat heette).

De locale heb ik overigens op English-UK gezet; ik ga er van uit dat laptops hier 'europees' engels zijn.

(2) De 'FN+ESC' "CD" methode, zie reactie van Netroller: Klikkerdeklik.

Use Fn+Esc, with a CD. Rename CL50145A.fd to ICL50HW.FD, burn it to a CD, remove the battery from the laptop, press and hold Fn+Esc, plug in the charger, press the Power button, release Fn+Esc, and insert the CD. The BIOS should be loaded.

Note that there is an MXM-patched BIOS available for the 7720G in the "Possible fix for the X920G vs. 9600M GT issue" thread, which may improve 9000-series compatibility.

(3) De wat simplere USB stick methode: Klikkerdeklik.

download the bios files from acer site, unpack them (right click extract with winrar)
Rename the bios file xxxxxx.fd to ICL50.fd or ICL50HW.fd (do not touch the extension) PLEASE CONFIRM WHICH FILE IS CORRECT. THIS WILL HELP FOR OTHER USERS. Use andy's tool to obtain the right name for your recovery.
Copy the file to usb fdd,or usb flash stick. DO NOT MAKE anything etc. ONLY COPY
Remove battery, adapter (power cord) , mouse etc.
Attach usb fdd, or usb flash stick
Hold down <Fn> + <Esc>, Edit by Yen: At other Notebooks it's <windows> key + <B>
Plug In the Ac Power adapter, wait about 3-5 secs
Press the power button
Now release the buttons.
It took about 2-3 minutes and notebook powered down itself.......
Then plug in the battery simply power it on.
That’s all. Now normal screen appears and acer is alive

THIS IS INTENDED FOR USE WITH ASPIRE 5315, 5720, and 7720 models based on the ICL50 motherboard which uses the INSYDE type BIOS.

i cut and pasted this from a PM i sent to a member who had a corrupt BIOS.
i accidentially corrupted my BIOS while creating this walk-thru for him, but atleast my effort to help him ended up helping me recover my own BIOS even though it didn't work for him...


INSTRUCTIONS::


FORMAT A USB THUMB DRIVE use FAT, or FAT16 as the file structure when you format it!
use a small capacity thumbdrive if possible,, large thumb drives may require FAT32 to format properly(and no floppy ever required FAT32 so that might cause the recovery to fail)

then put the FILE (linked below) ON THE BLANK THUMB DRIVE

ICL50HW.fd (important FILE from the actual CRYSIS FLOPPY DISK IMAGE)


download and copy it to the formatted thumb DRIVE

go to the 5315,,

(1.) REMOVE CD or DVD if possible (you may have to press the power button the quickly press the CD EJECT button)

(2.) REMOVE ALL USB DEVICES, NETWORK CABLES, (anything hooked to the laptop)

(3.) PRESS AND HOLD the POWER BUTTON DOWN FOR 5 secs to shutdown the laptop

(4.) REMOVE BATTERY

(5.) REMOVE AC CORD

(6.) PUT the USB THUMB DRIVE IN USB SLOT ON RIGHT SIDE OF LAPTOP (the one i used anyway)

(7.) PRESS AND HOLD the POWER BUTTON down for 10 secs... release

(8.) while holding FN + ESC plug in AC POWER CABLE, (KEEP HOLDING FN+ESC the whole time)

(9.) NOW PRESS POWER BUTTON & HOLD IT DOWN... THE FAN SHOULD SPIN UP (keep holding FN+ESC) ONCE FAN SPINS UP, RELEASE POWER BUTTON

(10.) eventually the fan will shut off.... (seemed like 30 seconds,, but could have been 5 minutes... i was freaking out)

when fan shuts off i unplugged my AC CORD... REMOVED THE USB DRIVE,,,, and then plugged the AC power back in,,,

then pressed power and my the miracle of technology and my preserverance... i got a green power light followed by an ACER POST SCREEN!!!

(BIOS VERSION IS GOING TO BE OLD AND TIME IS WAY OFF)... but atleast it should boot..

time to winflash back to 1.43

BTW when using WINFLASH... exit all programs,,, kill all tasks in taskbar... (i never do,,, but it's a good habit to be in)

In alle gevallen gaat de fan als een gek draaien (hoort zo geloof ik); maar als er een cd in zit; knippert de drive heel even en doet vervolgens niets meer. Bij methode (1) heb ik 'm één keer een uur aangehad; zonder resultaat dus. USB Drives doen ook niets; het ledje op de USB stick gaat niet eens branden.

Heeft iemand hier nog tips hoe ik wellicht de laptop back alive kan krijgen?

Reflowen van de oude kaart heeft ook weinig zin denk ik, omdat de oorspronkelijke recovery partitie weg is; Winflash lijkt mij niet logisch.

Dus de grafische kaart is stuk en je neemt nu aan dat de BIOS defect is. Hoezo deze beredenering? Waarom troubleshoot je de hardware niet gewoon, mogelijk was niet alleen de GPU stuk maar ook het mobo? Of mogelijk is de nieuwe GPU ook defect dat kan je niet uit sluiten? En is er ook een beknopte versie van je geprobeerde methodes, het lijkt me niet nodig om 5 pagina’s te moeten lezen hiervoor

Nee, maar op alle fora blijkt dat als je een nieuwe graka in de laptop zet; je de bios moet updaten; zeker als je daarna nog steeds geen beeld hebt.

Ik heb het stappenplan uit de links gequote.

Gezien op hoe de laptop zich gedraagt, mislukt het updaten van de bios, als je de methodes uit de links volgt; blijkt namelijk dat inderdaad de fans voluit gaan draaien, maar na 2-5 minuten moet de laptop zichzelf uitzetten, dit gebeurt echter niet; vandaar dat ik het probleem nu bij de bios zoek.

Er zijn ook speciale geunlockte bios'sen voor deze laptop in de omloop, de zogenaamde MXM edition, maar die heb ik nergens terug kunnen vinden.


Waar ik met name mee zit,

Als je de bios update; moet je dan per sé een bootable usb stick of cd gebruiken, of hoef je alleen het (juiste) bios bestandje op de stick/cd te zetten?

Dit heeft niets met overklokken te maken, dus even een move naar Complete Systemen & Laptops.

Ik dacht dat hij in Overclocking & Tweaking moest; omdat een andere grafische kaart in een laptop bouwen toch wat meer een tweaking gehalte heeft; maar toch bedankt!
