With Redhat you get this message everytime you want to login.
Red Hat Linux release 6.0 (HedWig)
Kernel 2.2.9 on an i586
host login:
This message is easiely changed by editing /etc/issue. You also have to edit /etc/issue.net if you want another message when somebody connects to your machine using telnet.
Redhat is replacing these files with the original message whenever you reboot your machine. This is done in /etc/rc.d/rc.local. You have to edit this file to make your changes permanent.
Delete the following lines from /etc/rc.d/rc.local
# This will overwrite /etc/issue at every boot. So, make any changes you
# want to make to /etc/issue here or you will lose them when you reboot.
echo "" > /etc/issue
echo "$R" >> /etc/issue
echo "Kernel $(uname -r) on $a $(uname -m)" >> /etc/issue
cp -f /etc/issue /etc/issue.net
echo >> /etc/issue

(zie boven)
