Hallo allemaal,

I’ve recently bought all the supplies for a new PC.

Thermaltake Commander MS-I
MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr III Power Edition/OC
OCZ ModXStream Pro, 700W
Asrock Z68 EXTREME3 GEN3
Intel 2500K
Kingston 8GB 133MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM
Western digital Caviar Green (2TB Harddrive)
Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B cooler
A simple Sony AD-7280S DvD Drive
And 3 simple Zalman ZM-F3BL ventilators
Running Windows 7 64-bit

I installed everything together with a friend who had more experience with it and it worked great for 2 weeks. Then one day when I started Shogun 2, my screen went black and windows refused to start. I didn’t back anything up at that point so I had to reinstall windows completely, which wasn’t such a problem. But when I installed the NVIDIA Drivers 280.26 from the CD, my resolution went way down and all the colors were washed out. If I then upgraded the drivers to the latest version; 301.42, my pc crashed and windows once again refused to start. This time I was smart enough to have a recovery point.

I then had my friend over again to test my video card in his PC. The exact same thing occurred. When I put his card in my PC, everything seemed fine. Although I didn’t do any stress test at that time. This assured me that my card was broken. So I made an RMA, explained what I experienced, and send it to the company I got it from. 2 weeks later I got an email saying that they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. For the second time I explained exactly what I experienced and that I tested it in another computer. Another 2 weeks later I got an email containing screenshots of their tests confirming that there is nothing wrong with the card, and that they would send it back.

Once I had it back and installed it, everything seemed fine at first. I installed the latest drivers (301.42) and LA Noire and could play it for as long as I liked. But when I tried playing Battlefield 3, my PC crashed after a little more than 1 minute. Often it just crashes to desktop, but sometimes it forces my PC to reboot.
I got this stress testing program called FurMark to do some further testing. It appeared as though my video card didn’t receive enough power when it needed it. When I enabled the option Force constant voltage in the MSI Afterburner, it could run Battlefield 3 or FurMark for as long as 30 minutes. But a crash was always inevitable. When it crashes to desktop it gives an error code 4, 7 or 8. Depending on which driver version is installed. The temperature won’t go higher than 62 Celsius.
Note that every time I installed a different driver version, I used Driver Fusion in safe mode to delete all trace of the previous drivers.

I borrowed a different PSU, the Corsair CX600, from a friend. After installation I noticed that it made no difference. I also tested my CPU with Prime95, it can run for hours without crashing. And running the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool detects no problems whatsoever.

I figured it had to be a software issue. I decided the best thing to do was to reinstall windows all over again and install all motherboard and NVIDIA drivers by the book. Then made sure windows was completely updated. But when I started FurMark again, it still crashes.

I also tried removing the video card from my PC, uninstalling all NVIDIA Drivers using Driver Fusion, and then disabling the onboard VGA in safe mode. Finally installing the card back into my PC and reinstalling the NVIDIA Drivers again, without success.

I also tested a different NVIDIA video card using the same drivers. No crashes at all. I did uninstall the drivers before installing this new video card.

Long story short: Whenever I try to play a graphics heavy game, the NVIDIA Display drivers stop responding.

I am completely out of ideas at this point. Please help.

Also note that I have 3 friends with the exact same video card, motherboard, memory and PSU that have no problems whatsoever. I was present when all 3 of them installed their PC’s and I am positive that I have done nothing different.

Groetjes,
