Cause of Death is a video game developed and published by Electronic Arts for iOS on December 16, 2010.[1] This game is intended for a more mature audience than its companion game Surviving High School, as the game revolves around murders and serial killers. The suggested age on iTunes is 12+. The game's format consists of Volumes. Each volume has 8 episodes (with the exception of Volume One), which are aired for free once a week. Each volume revolves around a central killer.

Cause of Death is an interactive game where the player can make choices from a list of options to determine the outcome. There have been 7 volumes released as of now, with the 8th to premiere on February 13, 2012. Each volume centers on one main serial killer, and every volume has 8 "episodes", except for Volume One, which has 6. Every week, an episode is aired for free, and the players are also given the option to download the episode following the aired one, for an amount of money (generally 99 cents).

In between each volume is a side story, generally centered around a main character other than Mal Fallon or Natara Williams, with the exception of Halloween Special, Dead Man Walking, Part 1 and Part 2, which IS focused on Mal and Natara and is simply a Halloween Special. So far, there have been 5 side stories: Side Stories: Amy's Case, Part 1 and Part 2, Side Stories: Detective Kalaba, Part 1 and Part 2, Side Stories: Fallon and Yeong, Part 1 and Part 2, Halloween Special: Dead Man Walking, Part 1 and 2, and Greene Zone, Part 1 and Part 2.

In addition, there has also been Premium Content, which has sometimes acted as fillers in the way Side Stories have. The main differences are in the gameplay and presentation. While the Side Stories are in the same choice list and determined outcome fashion, Premium Content is usually a collection of short stories based on many characters in different stories at the same time. For example, A Cause of Death Christmas has two short stories, one about Mal and Natara, and the other about all the other charaters at the precinct. Also, in the short stories, you don't make choices, you just sit back and read the episode. There have been 5 Premium Content episodes so far, 3 short story collections and 2 other premium content episodes (in order of release): Your Case: The Missing Child Secret Files Love and Bullets A Cause of Death Christmas Valentine Short Stories

Love and Bullets, A Cause of Death Christmas, and Valentine Short Stories are all short story collections. The first contains 4 short stories, the second 2, and the last 2, as well as a Volume 8 Preview.

Your Case: The Missing Child and Secret Files are other premium content, the first being a "personalized crime solving experience," and the latter a collection of information on each of the characters, such as their birthday, status, and a few paragraphs about them.

Characters

The 2 main characters in this game would be Detective Mal Fallon and his partner, Natara Williams. There are many other important characters.

Detective Malachi "Mal" Fallon

Considered one of the best detectives in the San Fransisco Police Department, he is known for his quick wit and intelligence. His superior is the Captain Maria Yeong, and he seems to harbour an affection with his partner, Natara Williams. He has some troubled relationships, having separated from his wife following her infidelity, and is estranged from his father due to the latter's crimes. In his youth, Mal is said to have had trouble with the law, as noted in "Secret Files." In the earlier volumes, Mal was known for "going with his gut," and it is supposed he passed on this behavior to his partner, Natara Williams. He also has gotten into much less trouble with his Captain since Natara arrived. Mal's full name, Malachi Charles Fallon, is revealed in Volume 4, Chapter 2, Blood Relations Part One when Mal visits his father, Jacob Fallon in the hospital. If the wrong choice is picked, Jacob yells Mal's full name in an effort to get him to come back and talk to him.

Agent Natara Williams

Natara Williams is an excellent profiler. She holds the rank of Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Her father, Raj Mansingh, the 113th richest man in the world, is estranged from her due to disagreements with her career. She has a sister named Neha Mansingh, and a mother named, Anita Mansingh. Natara changed her name in college to avoid special treatment from her classmates and professors. Natara planned to go into the same business owned by her father, Mansingh Transglobal, but (as told by the "Secret Files" content on Cause of Death,) "grew fascinated with criminal psychology after the murder of a close friend." She is told she seems to be a mindreader on multiple times, and always has a witty come back for anyone's quips or sarcastic remarks. She was in a relationship with Agent Shawn Mallory, who in Volume 5, Episode 8, Mallory, is presumably killed by Mal Fallon. Shawn killed several people in an effort to get Natara's attention after their relationship was ended. A few months later, Natara became Acting District Attorney Oscar Santos' girlfriend. The status of their relationship is unknown, but will most likely be resolved in Volume 8.
