EqualLogic "Accelerated RAID 6"

Met de introductie van firmware 5.0 en de nieuwe modellen PS6000XVS and PS6010XVS ken de Dell EqualLogic iSCSI SAN nu "Accelerated RAID 6".


In eerste instantie dacht ik dat ze net zoiets als Sun Storage 7000 met ZFS hadden gedaan (SSD gebruiken voor filesystem transactie log en als level 2 cache).

Maar dan lees ik het volgende in de release notes:

A new RAID policy, called RAID-6 Accelerated, is available on XVS array models. RAID-6 Accelerated provides RAID 6 parity protection, while optimizing the use of solid-state drives for optimal performance.
In XVS systems, one hard disk drive is configured as a spare and provides redundancy protection in the event of either an SSD or HDD failure. In the event of an SSD failure, the RAID set is reconstructed using the HDD spare. During this time, array performance is temporarily degraded. When the failed SSD is replaced, the data is copied back to the new SSD, the HDD returns to its status as a spare, and performance returns to optimal levels.

Vooral dat stukje in bold begrijp ik niet. Alsof de SSD gewoon 1 van de disks in de RAID 6 set is.

Heeft iemand al ervaring met deze nieuw EqualLogic modellen of al meer gelezen over "Accelerated RAID 6"?
Ik heb even gezocht op de Dell EqualLogic site maar kon zo snel geen white paper o.i.d. vinden.

't zal wel een raid 6 set van SSD's zijn, met een HDD als spare. Spaart kosten. Veel specialer dan dat zal het wel niet zijn..

Ahh, ik ging er van uit dat er maar 1 SSD in zat en voor de rest alleen HD's maar dat staat er inderdaad helemaal niet.

Even verder gezocht en het lijkt erop dat deze modellen "Eight ( hot-pluggable Solid State Disk (SSD) drives and Eight ( hot-pluggable SAS hard disk drives" hebben.

-Combines 100 GB SSD drives and 450 GB 15,000 RPM SAS drives
-System Capacities 4.4 TB using eight ( 100 GB SSD drives and eight ( 450 GB† SAS disk drives

"Accelerated RAID-6" is ook het enige RAID level dat je kunt instellen op deze modellen.
