Hello guys,

I would like to know if you could help me choose an Internet provider.

I am going to live in Amsterdam center. I could take Internet with UPC but it seems expensive and the reviews seem to be mixed (limited downloads). My usage is essentially web browsing, a bit of PS3 gaming and heavy usenet downloads such as BlueRays etc.. (not rare to download over 100gb/month).

From what I have gathered you have to get a KPN landline in order to get ADSL?

Which ISP are known to limit the downloads? I have a Giganews SSL account, would they filter it?

What is then the best value for money provider? I don't need or want TV or VOIP or any other services from my broadband.

Also how long does it take to get the KPN + the broadband service?

Many thanks as I just arrived and haven't started learning Dutch yet (doing a lot of Google translate on a 3G connection is quite painful!)

Pierre

There's no more filtering from UPC, so if you want speed (and a little faster ping) i would go for UPC. Not 1 provider is making a problem for downloading over 100GB, maybe they wil for couple TB's.
If you'r going for UPC you can't only have internet from them. They wil charge u for tv/radio too .link
KPN is a little bit expensive for what you get. If you want ADSL you can just look what the best price for you is. Online is a cheap one. €23,- for 20mbit/s :)
O, UPC dilivers in 4 days, Online 5 to 15 days. (I think 15)

btw sorry for my bad english :P

Thanks for your reply

Regarding Online... do I have to subscribe to a KPN phone line as well?

Their website says that

Lijnhuur
Goedkoop Internet: Toeslag lijnhuur € 5 p/m (als u geen KPN lijn heeft)
Snel Internet: Gratis

Does that mean with the package at 23euros I don't need the KPN line? I was told you need one by a customer service guy from another ISP.

Cheers
Pierre

That means that if you don't have a telephone line (and number) from KPN, you will have to pay an extra monthly charge of € 5 to rent the bare copper.

Telfort is a little bit cheaper, 25 euro a month, first 6 months only 14,95 (Telfort Internet Plus)
http://internet.telfort.n...es.html#open-tab-tarieven
And no additional costs to 'rent' the line.

Fill in your zipcode at http://internet.telfort.nl/shop/index.html to see what speed you can get at your address.

It will take 4-6 weeks to get ADSL from Telfort.

I think they changed that, but "lijnhuur" is still free if you go for 20mb/s, then you don't have to get KPN phone and you don't have to pay €5,- every month
Snel Internet
Extra's:
Korting à € 12,50 (3 mnd)
Gratis spam- en virusfilter
Gratis draadloos modem
De eerste 3 maanden:
€ 10
Daarna € 22,50 per maand.

So first 3 months €10,-, after that it will be €22,50.

Before you want to order go to this site and look how far you are away from the centrale, if you are to far you won't get the 20mbit.

Not exactly.

According to http://www.online.nl/tarieven/ the "Extra" subscriptions already include lijnhuur. For the "Basic" subscription you pat 5 euro extra, but only if you don't already have a KPN telephone subscription.

If your house doesn't yet have a KPN connection, check with the ISP how much it will cost extra to get connected. I believe it's around 80 euros?

I still would consider UPC.

Since you mentioned you're subscribed to Giganews you might want to profit also from that... Using it with a DSL connection is offcourse possible, but its like driving with a Ferrari on a small road.. A cheaper usenetprovider is possible in that case.

Also note the speed of DSL is limited to the line distance. Depending on your location its usually about 10-15Mbit (on average).

The UPC Fiber power 25 is for example almost the same price as any DSL provider, with the difference being the 25Mbit instead of the 'up to 20Mbit', so on average the UPS connection is faster. In many cases twice the speed of DSL.

Besides the internet subscription you'll need an active analog cable. That will cost you 17 eur additional, but you might want to have that anyway (even with DSL, in order to watch TV). Digitenne is offcourse possible, but the quality is worse than cable, and some channels are not available. Since you're not native Dutch, and still starting to understand, you might prefer channels like BBC for example, which are not available on most other TV providers...

Also, setting it up and running is faster. DSL takes usually 15 days, cable can be up and running faster.

UPC did some rate limiting in the past. However, due to massive complaints they don't do that anymore (at least, not at this moment). But even when they did (during peak hours), you still got some decent speeds, which equals an average DSL connection. Without limiting, the speed would be even higher.

Just a question on the side, do you have cable TV at the moment? If so, you should consider an UPC all-in-one package. Because just like with ADSL, you need cable TV to get UPC cable Internet.

Moreover, as said before, UPC does not cap anymore. It's a safe choice and there is more future in cable at the moment than there is in ADSL (bandwidth wise).

Well, I usually don't really watch TV. I prefer to download my movies and series anyway.

If I look at the price

UPC 25mbits (bundle with TV) = 25 + 16.80 = 41.80 euro per month
Telfort/Online = 25 euro per month

It looks like 41.80 - 25 = 16.80 which nearly pays my Giganews subscription!

I am supposed to be around 600 meters from the ADSL exchange so I should get at least 15Mbits.

Why so serious?

I'll keep this topic open for now, since at least you're making an effort to search for a solution,
even though the main language for GoT is dutch.

However, please try to have your topic title as descriptive as possible.
