Win98 hangt in setup. (grpconv.exe)

Hier is er weer een voor de database, altijd handig als iemand er nog eens naar zoekt.

Ik had een fijn probleem met een win98 setup (OEM en SE), tijdens de installatie hing het systeem bij het laatste setup-scherm (aanmaken program groups, help, system config etc..).
Een ctrl+alt+del gaf een not-responding grpconv.exe aan. Over de oorzaak heb ik nog geen flauw idee, maar hier een leuke work-around:
(moet erbij zeggen dat ik 2 OS-en heb waarvan win2k gewoon werkte, dat maakt het een stuk gemakkelijker aangzien je een aantal bestandjes moet editen die dus op je HD staan. Ik neem aan dat het met een tekstverwerker in DOS ook moet kunnen.)

Komt ie:
Zoek alle *.inf bestanden met daarin de tekst "grpconv.exe" :
IEfiles.inf
Netcli.inf
Layout1.inf
Ndiswan.inf
Shell.inf
Subase.inf

Zoek in al deze files een regel die grpconv.exe aanspreekt bijv:
HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\currentVersion\RunOnce."%Grpconv_Desc%",,"%25\grpconv.exe -o"

Zet hier dus een punt-komma voor om de regel niet uit te laten voeren:
;HKLM,Software\Microsoft\Windows\currentVersion\RunOnce."%Grpconv_Desc%",,"%25\grpconv.exe -o"

Doe dat bij alle *.inf bestanden die je verdenkt (ik heb ze maar meteen allemaal gedaan) en reboot.
Negeer alle foutmeldingen en setup zal zich tot een goed einde weten te brengen. Herstel de .inf bestanden eventueel en veel plezier ;)!

Had je wel een (werkende) floppydrive?
Erg vervelend, tijdens de laatste procedure als ie een helpfile aan het maken is zoekt hij een seconde naar de floppydrive (rede = unknown). Als je dan geen drive hebt dan hangt de instalatie.

Dit probleem heb ik met de installatie van ME gehad. Had toen geen oplossing en maar een Ghost van 98 terug gezet.

Hmmm, dat ie een floppy zoekt weet ik inderdaad nu wel (Fuck win98!) maar dat was niet de reden van deze hangup! Ben nu druk aan het zoeken in de knowledge base van M$ om te kijken hoe ik mijn floppy uit 98 kan slopen.

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Setup may stop responding (hang) during the Plug and Play hardware detection process. When you restart your computer, Setup may hang at the same point. 



CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the System.ini file contains the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line. 



RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, disable the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line in the System.ini file. To do so, follow these steps: 



Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information. 


On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility. 


On the Sytem.ini tab, double-click [Boot]. 


Click the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" check box to clear it, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer. 


After Setup is completed, repeat steps 2-5, clicking the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" check box to select it in step 5. 


Verify that Normal Startup is selected on the General tab in System Configuration Utility. 


Restart the computer when prompted. 





MORE INFORMATION
Some video adapters, such as Creative Labs PCI 3D video adapters, may replace the "Display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv" line with the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line. This can prevent Plug and Play hardware detection from working properly.
