I was very happy when the mp620 came out. Because of the price combined with good quality and an ethernetport and wifi connection.
But the new printers of canon the mp 540 mp620 mp 630 and mp 980 have a new type of ink cartridge which has 2 disadvantages compared to the previous printer series (like the mp520 mp600 mp600r mp 610 mp 970 and before)
the ink carridges carry a significantly smaller amount of ink compared to the previous models.
Also the changed form factor and chips design makes it impossible at the moment to get some cheap replacement cartridges.
the mp610 and before have these cartridges:

Canon CLI-8BK 13 ml
Canon CLI-8C 13 ml
Canon CLI-8M 13 ml
Canon CLI-8Y 13 ml
black for documents:
Canon PGI-5BK 26 ml
each cartridge costs about €10 so that makes about €50 for a complete replacement.
for €3.50 there are replacements cartridges which have the same or better quality as the canon ink. (there are also cheaper replacements but they tend to have lower quality ink or a too flexible cheap container. SO i can get a good replacement set for €17,50 and each replacement container then has 2 more ml ink in it than the original ones.

when comparing the inkt usage of the mp610 (with non-original cartridges but same quality ink) to that of the mp620) with original cartridges, the price per page is about 4 times higher using the mp620 compared to the mp610.
Conclusion:
It may well be worth to look into the inkt usage perspective of the printer ink usage when looking for a new printer. The mp620 at the moment has a price per page that is 4 times as high as the price per page of the mp610. The main cause is the smaller capacity of the new ink tanks and the lack of replacements.
If you dont really need a network connection on your printer it might be much more economical to look for the mp610 which has a lower price per page, has a new scanner with a better quality than the mp620 the mp 610 also supports auto-printing double sided the mp620 does not. the mp 610 has a faster print rate for photos 21 seconds for the mp 610 compared to 41 for the 620.
mp620. Also the mp610 has a slightly better print quality.
With these prices per page. Even if you need a network port and you plan to print more than 1000 pages the coming year it might be more economical to go for the mp610 and buy a separate print server instead.
