(John W. Gardner)

En:quote: DealExtremeA Linux system is certainly within reason on a CF card, but Windows isn't a good choice.
CF data cells have a limited number of write cycles before they fail. A couple hundred thousand writes and it's goodbye, CF card. Even with (most cards) usage leveling schemes, it's going to fail eventually.
A Linux system can be configured to load itself into a main memory (I'm talking RAM here, not CF) disk emulator. From that point out, there are no write cycles to the CF card and it should last forever.
In contrast to that mode of operation, Window spends a lot of time writing to its system disk. Log files, swapping things out, page faulting - all involve writes to the system disk.
It's certainly possible to load, say, Windows 2000 on a CF card and run it, but be prepared for it to fail within a month or so.
quote: DealExtremeThere are 3 things which make CF much better for WinXP:
1) Use a compact flash card with SLC, not MLC chips in it. MLC chips only have a few hundred thousand write cycles while SLC are a million and much faster reading and writing.
2) Use a card much larger than you need. For example if your Winxp installation occupies 400MB, do not use a 512MB or 1GB CF card, use at least 2GB. The reason is that with 512MB card, you have 112MB free space continually being rewriten to reach that 1 million cycles, but with a 2GB card you have 1,648MB free space, you will get over 14X as many writes before you hit that 1 million per cell limitation.
3) Use the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) from XP embedded even if using regular XP instead of embedded XP. After you have turned off all the logging you can in windows, the remaining writes can be kept from going to the CF card. This #3 step actually makes #1 and #2 unimportant, but SLC chips will still greatly increase performance as will a CF3 or CF4 spec'd card which allows for faster ATA mode.
Following these steps you should have several years of trouble-free use from CF running XP. It will last longer than a hard drive would.
Oslik blyat! Oslik!
