With DPC so far ahead on OGR-P2, we are considering switching to a new project.

However I need some input from DPC as to which project might need us and our preference for a project that I can offer personal stats for our team for each individual flusher and still be a subteam under DPC. I need this as to offer some fun and competition for EH members to attract members to join it. Even if I no longer host the stats and could still determine individual EH members as a team would be great.

Any ideas would be welcome :)

I think any project would welcome any new members and every project will have its own reason:
- to keep DPC in the Teams Top 30 (e.g. F@H),
- to get DPC higher in the Teams Top 30 (e.g. smaller BOINC projects) or
- to defend DPC #1 positions (e.g. DPAD and SoB).

So the choice is really up to you and it depends on the kind of client you want to run. e.g. if Windows admin rights are a problem then a lot of projects wont be suitable. I suggest you try out a few projects yourself, get a feel of the different clients and then determine what would be best for EH :)

"My" project is SoB and even we are currently holding #1 there the number #2 Team is rapidly closing in, so any help would be appreciated ;)

I'd go for SoB. As Frentik in the above post mentionned, we're still at the first position but the current second team (Anandtech) is catching up on us very fast. Their output is sometimes more than five times as big as ours, and at this current rate it will take less than two months before we've lost the first position.

More help on this project would be very welcome.

Edit: detailled stats are perfectly possible, I gladly refer to http://sob.qik.nl/index.php as example.

Byte or nibble a bit ?

Yep; SoB would be a strategic choice ... And since there's relatively little CPU power in place(compared to OGR), EH would definitely be crunching at the top. If you're looking for a #1 hotspot, you might wanna try a newer small project like i.e. PrimeGrid ...

OK. I am considering switching us over to SoB. I still have a few questions regarding setup and stats.

I guess http://sob.qik.nl/index.php would be the logical place to check stats or is it possible to get the source to host it by ourselves so that EH users see themselves listed in the team instead of trying to use the previous listed address and searching for their team and then their usernames. As we have members worldwide, I would prefer to centralise everything on our servers.

Client config wise, how would I go about to config it for EH as a subteam of DPC?

Inputs:
Your name:
Username:
Email address:
Team:

I guess I am fishing on how to run a team as a subteam.

Any help would be appreciated.

First register yourself at seventeenorbust.com, join DPC and crunch some blocks,. Once you appear in the stats at sob.qik.nl send an DM or email to Dukebox and ask him to creat the Elite Hackers subteam. You will be put directly in the new subteam.

Other users only have to install SoB, register and join DPC @ www.seventeenorbust.com and once they appeared on sob.qik.nl the can be put in EH bij Dukebox or a poweruser (me, kuuke?). Or after registering at sob.qik.nl every user can choose hos own subteam.

With more then 1 member your team might look like this: http://sob.qik.nl/index.p...e=2008-08-16&user=1000017

So you get a custom EH page at sob.qik.nl and if i'm correct its possible to make your own stats (I know think Division Brabant is doing that).

OK.. let me try it and see how far I get before I ask the whole team to switch over.

Although SoB might be a good pick, I think you might consider boinc--> primegrid or if you feel like doing a medical project rosetta or world community grid with their fight aids@home project, as well.
SoB is a small client just like dnet's is but it really isn't as solid icbw dual/quad and vista etc.as dnet is (in my opinion).

just my 2 cents ;)

I gotta agree with that. I did SoB during the last Stampede and although I loved that month I was happy to be released of that SoB client :s Anyway you can decide for yourself before getting your whole team over to another project. I'm doing WCG right now, with Primegrid as my backup project in case WCG would have a problem. Anyway I think all projects would welcome a boost in output }:O

I think SoB will fit our needs better.. The client is small, easy to deliver and to setup whereas boinc is 7mb big.

I will test them all first anyways.. Thanks

There's an advantage to BOINC however. If you ever want to switch to another project again, there's plenty to pick from, and switching over is a breeze, as is running multiple projects.

On the other hand, DPC's number one spot is currently under attack at SoB and DPAD.

Chhose wisely :)

Whatever

DPAD is also a light client and another advantage is it doesn't need installation...

DPAD is out and after careful consideration, boinc as well.

DPAD stats does not satisfy our needs regarding individual members, meaning I will battle to offer some internal competition among EH members. In EH's old days, when it was dutch run, it would not be a problem, but at the moment we have only a few dutch members left, while the rest is worldwide and the internal competition is quite fierce.

The boinc client with its option for various features is quite OK, but once again, stats features are lacking and the client's size counts heavily against it.

Some advice regarding SoB. I can see myself at the moment as follows:

512. (5) 181.709 GrogSA 26.245.495 (17) 0

Who do I bother and how to create a subteam for EH?

Thanks for all the help guys!

To create a subteam you need to contact user 'Dukebox' and tell him your SoB name and desired teamname. You will automatically be made a team member.

To make other people members of the subteam:
- let them join DPC at SoB
- let them flush at least once
- mention their names in this topic or the daily SoB stats topics

The million dollar question however is when will it start? 2-6 months after OGR25 is completed?

Solid target dates would be nice as well as some specs.. I love the dnetc clients/stats combination, but we can't be idle till dnetc reach a verdict way after OGR is completed as I need to inform members, get them to update the client software, make certain stat server scripts can handle project logs, etc etc should a new project be in the pipeline..

I like to plan ahead and any SOLID info and not speculation is preferred. Sorry if I might sound hammering Sandstar, it was not the intention.

Why not RC5, same client, same proxy, same stats...

As I said before, RC5-72 might take quite a while just to get to 10%. It gets boring after a couple of months and at EH, I lose people doing dnetc as it "is not fun" after a while if the project carries on forever.

Reasons not to participate in RC5:

- There's no progression in this project whatsoever.
- It's useless (I know it's ment to proove how unsafe 72 bit encryption is, but because of the immense calculating power it takes to even reach 0.5 % of all possible combinations, it has proven the exact opposite. 512 bit encryption is nowadays the de facto standard anyway.)
- After RC5-72 is completed, they will just start RC5-80. It will never end.

I was an RC5 contributor for almost two years and I regret spending so much time on something that useless.

I've been hammering from time to time myself to get any news regarding new dnet projects. so np.
They're not that easy with giving information out. I'll bug Floppus about it (again :D )....

Please keep this thread on-topic and help The Elite Hackers answering their questions to that they can make a good choice.

Discussions about wether a project is usefull or not don't belong in this thread. I'm sure The Elite Hackers are familiar with this kind of discussions in their subteam.

Yes, Elitehackers only does these kind of discussions properly in our forums.

Update: I have posted a topic on our forums with a poll to see in which direction we will move.
I have the following projects as options. RC5-72, F@H and SoB. https://www.elitehackers.info/forums/showthread.php?t=17099

I will know in three days what will be our next project :)

GrogSA, I've read the "SoB client setup" topic over at EliteHackers and have three small remarks:

- "When it asks to create a new account, select no." should only be done for people who are al ready registered. The reason why some people can't retrieve blocks is probably because they aren't registered yet, thus using a nonexistent name.
- People who don't use Windows can't register using the program and must do it on seventeenorbust.com.
- "On completion, exit w/o new test" will close the program at the end of the current test, I'm not sure if that's very useful. It's more for people who are planning to leave the project, but want to finish their test before doing so.

Cheers,
Maxime.

Two other small remarks:

- Host sbq.qik.nl is made for the DPC megaflush on October 11th, before that date nobody using that host will appear in the stats.
- The stats are refreshed about every half hour.
