vista not found

hi,

I have a (internal) HDD with windows xp (32bit) installed on it. I took it with me to a friend to install windows vista ultimate 64bit on the hard drive, in my friends pc (disconnected his HDD and put in mine, so it was the only one in there).
When i got home i put the drive back in my pc and started it, to my surpise it only started xp.
The partition where i installed it on has 12Gb used, but you can't see anything in windows xp.
I've tried changing the boot.ini file: than when rebooting a option was shown, but when opened, it said there was no OS on the partition...
I have seached the internet for a solution, but all i could find was that vista doesn't use the boot.ini file.
i just went to get the dvd from my friend, but there is something strange: went i try to boot from it, it keeps loading. The loadingscreen (black with the green bar moving) just stays, i've waited 30minutes. When i installed it, it only took maybe a minute or so. I can't seem to find the problem.

The problem seems to be something with vista because i just tested if the 32bit version works, but the same result (infinite loadingscreen).
Apparently there has been a vista (home professional) installed on this computer a while ago, so it has to be possible. This vista was uninstalled almost immediately because my brother wanted windows xp back...
Perhaps this Vista wasn't uninstalled correctly and is still in the system. Could there still be a trace of the old vista somewhere in the bootfiles, if yes: where can i find or edit these files?
(other solutions are also welcome)

boot windows with the installation disk, but go to the repair-console (F8?), when you get into the commandline use fixmbr to fix your masterbootrecord.

Maybe reinstalling vista on your own computer instead of the one your friend owns..?
(I'm assuming here your friend's setup is somewhat different then yours..)

Gooi je harde schijf eens leeg en installeer dan Vista eens. Sowieso is het niet handig op een ander systeem te installeren, dat gaat zelfs met gelijkende configs vaak fout. Het moet echt overeenkomen wil het goed gaan werken.

I can only advise you to install a clean Vista installation on your computer itself. During installation OS (XP/Vista) tends to look at the pc configuration and load the drivers and software necessary for that system.
Putting your friends harddisk with his OS install in your computer usually doesn't work quite well.

sorry HlpDsK, ik spreek wel degelijk nederlands, maar ik was net wat mails aan het sturen en het engels en zat blijkbaar nog in engels mode , nogmaal sorry (als ik de beginpost moet vertalen, laat maar weten)

Viper®, Terw_Dan, weijl: ja inderdaad, daar was ik ook aan het denken. Ik veronderstelde eigenlijk initieel dat ik de vista zou kunnen herconfigureren eens opgestart op mijn computer.
Maar als ik je goed begrijp heeft het (voor mij) weinig nut dat ik vista reinstalleer, aangezien mijn idee eigenlijk was om de hardeschijf in een nieuwe enclosure the steken en dan als externe HDD (via esata) te gebruiken voor mijn laptop. Het is dus best dat ik de vista unistalleer en terug installeer wanneer deze aangesloten is aan de laptop (deze is momenteel nog in bestelling, dus kan ik het nog niet proberen).

Het probleem waar ik dan nu nog mee zit is: ik wou een nieuwe hdd in de computer steken en een andere vista daarop installeren, maar ik heb het nu net al eens geprobeerd en dat geeft het zelfde reultaat (blijft laden). Kan het zijn dat deze bootgegevens ergens in het moederbord zelf worden opgeslagen en zo voor problemen zorgen voor het herinstalleren?

Kijk eens of er een ACPI-optie in je BIOS zit en zet deze uit, of probeer ACPI-drivers te vinden voor je chipset - deze moet je dan vanaf een USB-stick laden tijdens het installeren. Ik had dat bij mijn laptop, met ACPI aan in het BIOS en de drivers niet geladen tijdens het installeren, bleef mijn laptop rebooten tijdens het laden van Vista. Toen ACPI uitgezet in het BIOS, de drivers hardhandig geïnstalleerd ("deze drivers zijn niet compatibel met uw hardware" nou doe toch maar lekker installeren) en nu werkt het als een zonnetje.
