Ik heb sinds een tijdje last van een vreemd gedrag van Vista x64, de oorzaak is mij ook niet helemaal duidelijk.

Scenario: Ik ben rustig gebruik aan het maken van mijn computer, internet wat, luister wat muziek, check een keer mijn mail. Dan wil ik een willekeurige applicatie openen. Dang. "This application failed to start because there was a side-by-side configuration error". Geen enkele applicatie wil dan meer starten, kan zelfs mijn PC niet rebooten omdat logon.scr ook een side-by-side error geeft.

Naast side-by-side errors krijg ik ook willekeurige 0x0 errors, de laatste bijvoorbeeld was 0xc0000135. Dit zou duiden op het missen van .NET 2.0, maar die is keurig geïnstalleerd en niet corrupt volgens de sfc /scannow check.

Na een tijdje Googlen ben ik erachter gekomen dat het iets met WinSxS te maken moet hebben, wat dit exact doet weet ik niet, maar heb het wel voor elkaar gekregen om een debug log te kunnen genereren van 2 voorbeeld fouten.

Ik heb geen flauw idee verder hoe ik dit kan oplossen, heb zelf het idee dat ik al het mogelijke al heb gedaan:
- Herinstallatie .NET 1.1, 2.0, 3.0
- Installatie van .NET 3.5
- Herinstallatie van VC++ 2005/2008 x64 en x86 redistributables.

Aangezien ik een beetje uitgeput raak qua mogelijkheden, hoop ik dat iemand nog tips heeft om mijn probleem op te lossen!

Na wat research op Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls in combinatie's met errors ben ik het vermoeden gaan krijgen waar mijn probleem aan zou kunnen liggen.

De meeste applicaties zijn nu Vista compitable gemaakt, waardoor ze eventueel automatisch er van uitgaan dat UAC aan staat op de betreffende machine. Ik heb geen UAC aan - dus kan de applicatie ook geen request doen om admin te worden, indien nodig.

Als ik zo weer Side-by-Side errors en die 0xc0000135 error krijg, zet ik UAC weer aan en kijk het even aan.

Ik dacht dat ik mijn problemen had opgelost met het aanzetten van UAC. Dit blijkt echter niet het geval, de 0x0000c135 error komt weer terug.

Denk haast dat een herinstallatie alleen dit probleem kan oplossen.
