Dan Ensign is m.i. toch wel de meest vermakelijke member van Pandegroup, en zijn laatste paper is onlangs geaccepteerd en is gebaseerd op werk van onze SMP clients!

Zodoende dacht ik om hem eens aan jullie voor te stellen, gezien het e.e.a. recent online is gekomen. Weer eens iets anders dan het dagelijks geouwehoer over de cijfertjes & palen.

Been a long time since I've posted a long-winded, strangely-worded, possibly accessible but uncommonly goofy post to the Folding@home Forums. However, this morning I found a welcome email proclaiming,

Apparently, I was able to trick the editors y reviewers of my recently submitted manuscript into publishing. The duplicity involved careful assembly of sort-of scientific ideas into what appear to be cogent arguments about the complexity of folding of even the fastest-folding protein yet discovered. Apparently, they bought my subterfuge. Suckers!

For those unfamiliar, the work of a scientist culminates in publication of your work and results in scientific journals. Oh, there are other things that complement a career in science -- like giving talks at prestigious meetings, and appearing on You Tube -- but publication is the pinnacle, the apogee, the pistachio of scientific accomplishment. But not in the itty bitty journals like Forest Products Journal or the Journal of Less Common Metals.

For me, it's the Journal of Molecular Biology. Not bad, mostly because people (read, "people I want to impress so I can get a job later") actually read this journal, and not just the people that study protein folding. Molecular biology is a very big field (that studies very small things); biology is nauseatingly complicated, which is wonderful for folks like me, since we'll never run out of things to study.

But since roughly 231,476.3 of you guys contributed to the computational power enabling us to study the folding of the villin headpiece subdomain (mutant HP-35 NleNle, NOT pronounced "N'Lee, N'Lee," although thinking of it, that sounds like a perfect taunt for when you're riding your bike and people cut you off). And because of y'all, we studied this sucker in what we believe is a statistically significant way. That is to say, we didn't just try it once, we tried it several thousand times, to get a sense of the kinds of things that might happen, and how common those things are.

Thank you, Zombie Horde. If you helped by folding any of projects 3036, 3037, 3040, 3041, 3042, or 3059 (and I have log files on the servers, and database access, and such), then I will dedicate a Python script to you. Each. Lord knows I'll be writing 231,476.3 of those suckers before I can graduate.

Later this week, I'll write a little Doohickey in the Results section of the forum with some details about What We Learned, or, more appropriately, How I Spent My Summer Vacation, and Spring Break, and Pretty Much 16 Months of My Life. It will give me an opportunity to communicate to those that are interested the importance of conformation and geometry in molecules, and why you should care, and how it will influence your vote in the 2008 presidential election (unless you're not an American, in which case there may be alternate consequences).

Gister nog een mooie: ik had bij een bak f@h als service geinstalleerd met de optie dat hij moest vragen voordat hij netwerkverbinding mocht maken service stoppen, client starten, probleem zien, client stoppen, client configgen, service starten en tot slot mezelf uitlachen.

Overigens vind ik het wel fijn om even een SMP tussen de gewone bakken te hebben lopen. Het geeft wel een extra boost aan de puntjes
