Ik heb een Thinkpad T61-laptop waarop momenteel Ubuntu 7.10 tribe 5 draait (met alle updates). Alles werkt naar behoren -- nog niet veel problemen mee gehad --, alleen mijn draadloos internet is vervelend traag. Downloads gaan niet sneller dan 50 kb/s (via http schommelt het meestal rond de 20 kb/s), wanneer ik probeer te surfen timen nogal veel paginas out en alles loopt wat, welja, moeilijker. Wanneer ik bijvoorbeeld een klein bestand wil downloaden, duurt het eerst een aantal seconden eer hij daadwerkelijk vertrekt. Op de Ubuntuforums lijkt het probleem niet onbekend te zijn, en wordt er stellig aangeraden vanalles met DNS-servers te regelen (ik ben er niet zo in thuis) en ipv6 uit te schakelen. Ik heb ondertussen al vanalles geprobeerd, tot dusver echter zonder soelaas. En het gekke (enfin, ik vind dat gek wanneer aangeraden wordt met DNS'en te gaan toveren) is dat alles via een bekabelde internetverbinging (gewoon via UTP) wel werkt (downloadsnelheden terug normaal, internetten zoals ik het gewend ben etc.).

Ik heb een draadloze Linksysrouter (weet niet of het modelnummer van belang is? Als ijdele hoop heb ik die alleszins terug in fabrieksstaat gezet, dus zonder enige beveiliging en een openbaar ssid en zo) de draadloze netwerkkaart is een Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 (met de ipw3945-driver).

Ik heb, op aanraden van ubuntuforums.com (hier en hier) geprobeerd de DNS-servers (die mijn router me gaf) proberen in te vullen in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf en wat geprutst met /etc/resolv.conf. Beide zonder noemenswaardig resultaat. Ook is ipv6 uitgeschakeld.

Opdat mensen met een mogelijk idee/voorstel er niet achter moeten vragen, hier alvast wat data, vers van het terminalvenster.

(Waarom hij eth1 een ethernetdevice noemt, is me een raadsel. Ik heb net wel weer vanalles geprobeerd en lang via het bedraad netwerk gesurft -- omdat dat niet tergend vervelend is --, maar denk alleszins niet dat dat zo hoort. Eerder stond het er wel niet zo, meen ik mij te herinneren.)

Kun je je kaartje in 11Mb/s zetten? (sudo iwconfig eth1 rate 11M)
Kun je in de router kijken hoe die je ziet?
Heb je al een andere router geprobeert/firmware ervan geupgrade?
Hoe zien je firewall-regels eruit?(sudo iptables -L)

Dus ik denk wel dat ik mijn kaart in 11 Mb/s zetten, maar tot dusver (heb ook reeds gereboot), levert dat geen merkwaardige prestatiewinst op.

Voor zover ik weet zijn er wel wat problemen met de ipw3945. Ik gebruik hem zelf ook en af en toe valt de snelheid terug naar 100 kb/s (ook via lan uiteraard) Enige optie op dat moment is wpa_supplicant herstarten en een nieuw ip aanvragen en dan werkt het weer op volle snelheid.

Misschien dat je probleem daaraan gerelateerd is?

(Alhoewel ik geen time-outs en dergelijke heb)

Na de Gutsy-updates van vandaag is het er niet beter op geworden: ik kan (volgens nm-applet) -- en ook alleen maar wanneer ik erg lang wacht en tijdens het verbinden (wanneer die twee bolletjes in het notification area zo omsingeld worden door dat groen ding) mijn wifi hardwarematig, via een hardwareswitch aan de laptop dus, rap uit-en aanzet -- nog wel draadloos op mijn netwerk geraken (alsook op dat van de buren), maar internetten (alsook surfen naar de router) wil helemaal niet meer werken.

Wanneer ik op het netwerk van de buren zit, vertelt mijn terminalvenster me het volgende:

Ook, maar dat was in zekere zin eerder ook al, al lijkt het nu wat erger te zijn geworden, is de GNOME Network Manager (nm-applet) totaal niet reactief en erg traag. Ook duurt het vaak een tijdje voordat het Network Settings-scherm verschijnt (enfin, bruikbaar is; eerst is er voor een minuutje slechts een wit scherm te zien). Soms, wanneer ik via Network Settings nog eens iets geprobeerd heb, verlies ik mijn wifi-kaart blijkbaar volledig, en krijg ik dit:

@hierboven , als je geen wpa_supplicant gebruikt kun je volgens mij gewoon je interface herstarten , alhoewel ik geen ervaring hiermee heb zonder wpa_supplicant :)

Misschien helpt dat (iig tijdelijk)

Niet. Je hebt hem namelijk al :) De makkelijkste manier om hem te gebruiken is door de iwp3945 driver weg te gooien met de Restricted Drivers Manager en de ipw3945-module te rmmodden, aangezien dat hoogstwaarschijnlijk niet automatisch gebeurt :
rmmod ipw3945
Gevolgd door een modprobe van iwl3945 :
modprobe iwl3945
Done.

Om te zorgen dat iwl3945 automatisch laadt bij het booten voeg je hem toe aan /etc/modules (nieuwe regel). Aan te raden laatste stap : verwijder eth1 uit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules , dan zal udev vanaf dan een wlan0-interface aanmaken (finishing touch dus).

Deze commando's moeten als root, of met sudo uitgevoerd worden. Om jezelf wat typwerk te besparen kun je als je sudo gebruikt jezelf een root-terminal geven door
sudo -s
of
sudo su
te typen.
