Debian strippen

Hoi

ik wil een embedded boardje (zoals hier wel te lezen is in andere topics) voorzien van firefox+skype. Dit gebaseerd op debian.

Probleem is dat ik maar 500mb flash heb en dit na install van Xorg aardig vol zit. Het originele flashkaartje in dat systeem was ook debian (2.4 kernel) based en was maar 32mb. draaide X+twm op....

Echter zit ik nu firefox te installeren (had nog 60 meg ongeveer) en loop ik tegen ruimteproblemen op. Hoe kan ik het beste de 25-30 meg die ik nog nodig heb uit dit systeem squeezen? De manpages enzo heb ik er al afgedonderd net als wget traceroute etc.

Ziet iemand nog kandidaten die eraf mogen zonder het hele systeem te breken?


Verder is het zo dat ik alle meuk die verwijderd is verwijderd is met apt-get remove. Weet iemand nog plekken waar ik nog meer het mes in debian kan zetten? apt-get clean heb ik natuurlijk ook al gedaan. ik heb ook al naar slind gekeken maar ik gok dat me dat teveel tijd gaat kosten

Installeer deborphan en localepurge.
Dat scheelt al veel.
Ook moet je alle packages die je geremoved hebt "purgen", anders laten ze een heleboel configuratiebestanden en dergelijke achter.
Zo zie je welke je nog moet purgen bijvoorbeeld:

Met deborphan kan je libraries en packages opsporen die niet nodig zijn.
Localepurge zorgt ervoor dat je geen taalondersteuning hebt die je niet wilt.
Verder zie ik dat je ELKE xorg video driver geinstalleerd hebt.
Dus verwijder ze allemaal, behalve degene die je nodig hebt.
Ook zie ik dat je busybox gebruikt, maar tegelijk zie ik de tools die busybox eigenlijk moet vervangen?
Ik zie ook gcc en cpp, als je niets gaat compileren kan je die ook weghalen.

Edit: even in volgorde van te behalen ruimtewinst:

• Ik zie bijvoorbeeld een hele reeks 'xserver-xorg-video-*' varianten. Daarvan heb je er maar 1 nodig.

• Ik zie een stock kernel: dat betekent dat je hardhandig /lib/modules kan prunen: alle ongebruikte modules eruit gooien.

• Ik denk dat je python-2.4 eraf kan mikken

• libgl1-mesa-glx heb je denk ik ook niet nodig

• dselect heb je niet nodig

• w3m heb je niet nodig

• xutils-dev en dpkg-dev lijken me niet nodig

• libtext-iconv-perl kan weg, als je debconf-i18n vervangt door debconf-english
In de 'Important', 'Required' en 'Standard' packages zitten er stiekem aardig wat die er gerust af kunnen.

• Ik weet niet hoe groot firefox momenteel, maar ik kan me voorstellen dat je redelijk wat winst kan boeken door firefox zelf te compileren en er wat niet-essentiële onderdelen buiten te laten.

Sowieso zou ik ruimte besparen door de grootste delen van het bestandssysteem in een SquashFS of Cramfs image te zetten; die kun je eventueel schijfbaar maken door te combineren met een schijfbare partitie d.m.v. aufs of unionfs. (Of is het de bedoeling dat de target volledig zelfstandig wordt, en dan ook zelfstandig moet kunnen updaten e.d?)

Squashfs scheelt al snel een factor 3, dus dan kun je waarschijnlijk zonder veel trucs alles wel kwijt, maar even purgen is sowieso wel een goed idee, en je kunt ook overwegen om bepaalde directories (/usr/share/info bijvoorbeeld) uit je image te laten.

Verder zou ik bij een source-distributie aanraden te compilen met -Os, dat scheelt qua ruimte voor binaries aanzienlijk en maakt voor snelheid meestal weinig uit. Heeft Debian geen speciale embedded distributie ofzo met minimale packages?

SquashFS neemt wel een hoop rekenkracht in, voor een embedded device is dat ook niet ideaal.

Source based is idd erg handig en dan alles compilen op je normale pc, kan je heel veel strippen en verpest je niet je flash geheugen.

Wat ook wel kan schelen is om ulibC te gaan gebruiken ipv libc6, scheelt niet zo veel qua diskspace, maar wel qua ram gebruik.

squashfs trekt het ding niet, al geprobeerd.
emdebian was idd een optie, maar mi teveel werk voor deze klus.

het ding doet momenteel wat hij moet doen, maar ik ga waarschijnlijk zo nog even wat extra megabytjes eruit persen
