De gebruikte distributie is PClinuxOS2007, ik denk afgeleid van mandriva. Hun helpforum heeft geen soelaas gebracht. Het relaas is hier te lezen.

Het probleem:
Geen 1680x1050 resolutie.
Bij het scrollen doet ie 1 sec om het beeld te hertekenen. Dit zou te wijten zijn aan de slechte driver (Xorg > vesa) en komt niet voor bij ati > radeon (fglrx) drivers.

hardware:
athlon 64 3200+ clawhammer
1GB RAM
Saphire X1950 Pro AGP 512MB
SyncMaster 226bw resolution 1680x1050

Met de driver vendor > ati > radeon(vesa) haal ik 1280x1024. Ook met xorg > vesa. Op 1680x1050 werkt het echter niet goed. Er wordt dan een andere resolutie gebruikt en het beeld wordt geschaald.

Met behulp van de synaptics manager heb ik package dkms-ati_legacy geprobeerd.
Bij het kiezen van Vendor > ati > Radeon( fglrx) in XFdrake vraagt ie of je de proprietaire driver wilt gebruiken of niet

Dit komt van de monitor, dus niet van X.

Ook nog geprobeerd om de drivers van de site van ati te installeren. Herstart en het systeem wou enkel nog in single user mode werken. Deinstalleren dan maar.

Dit soort vragen komen om een of andere reden vaak bij NOS terecht. Als je wilt kan ik je vraag daar wel naar verplaatsen.

Ik heb even je xorg.conf door zitten kijken en ik zie dat je wel ModeLines gedefineerd hebt. Dat zou namelijk mijn eerste suggestie zijn. Maar ik zie ModeLines van 120Hz en dergelijke. Volgens mij gebruikt Xorg vaak de hoogste refreshrate die beschikbaar is. Het kan zijn dat het daar mis gaat en de monitor een dergelijk hoge refreshrate toegezonden krijgt dat deze daar niet mee wilt werken.
Heb je al die ModeLines zelf aangemaakt, al zei dat met utilities, of heeft de installatie van je distro dat gedaan? Als je dat zelf niet hebt gedaan zou ik eens voor de grap al die Modelines commenten zodat ze niet meer actief zijn op misschien de bovenste na.

Mocht de ATi driver zelf gebruik maken van DPMS en DDC om de eigenschappen van de monitor te bepalen dan zou je ook eens de DMPS kunnen commenten door

in kunnen schakelen.
DMPS of DDC wordt geloof ik default al gebruikt door de ATi driver om de monitor te detecteren. Maar als je een ModeLine hebt is dat niet noodzakelijk. Door het uit te schakelen zou je dus misschien die een juiste ModeLine kunnen forceren.

Voordat je echter met je xorg.conf gaat klooien ben ik wel benieuwd naar de opties die de 'xrandr' app je biedt. Open dus eens een terminal in een X omgeving en bekijk eens de output van xrandr.
Staat daar wel een 1680x1050 resolutie bij? Post voor de compleetheid ook eens die output hier.

Mocht alles overigens geen baat hebben dan zou je ook zelf even een nieuwe xorg.conf aan kunnen maken. Maar daar kijken we later wel even naar.

De xorg.conf bovenaan is gemaakt door XFdrake. Het beeldscherm word automatisch correct herkent bij installatie van de distro. Deze conf file was gemaakt door XFdrake *nadat* ik de drivers vanop de ati website had geinstallerd en vervolgens XFdrake vertelt deze driver te gebruiken met 1680x1050 24bit.

Deze driver liet het systeem niet meer goed werken (enkel nog single user mode) waarna ik de driver terug gedesinstalleerd heb.

Let wel! Deze output is genomen met de ati > radeon(fglrx) drivers vanuit het dkms-ati package. Dus NIET dezelde als waarvoor de conf file werd geschreven!
Maximum resolutie in de output hier is 1280x1024 en dat is dan ook de resolutie waarop het staat ingesteld, op 75Hz.

Hmm, als ik me niet vergis heeft die ATi fglrx driver zelf een Xorg configuratie utility. Daarmee heb ik zelf een keer op een PC met een recentere Radeon geworsteld om de juiste resoluties er in te beuken. Dat werkte toen na 2 keer prutsen, maar is al een tijdje geleden en het exacte ben ik dus even kwijt.
Bekijk eens de readme files en driver documentatie, daar zullen vast wel vermeldingen in staan over dat soort dingen. En zoek ook zeker het forum door van je distro, omdat deze afgeleid lijkt te zijn van Mandrake/Mandriva zou ik ook daar eens gaan snuffelen.

Ik gooi deze even naar NOS omdat daar wat meer kans is op de juiste hulp dan in VB.

De informatie van xrandr is afgeleid van wat de driver aankan? Of eerder van de huidige instellingen?
Onderstaand is een testverslag. Ik heb bij alle drivers de standaard instellingen geprobeerd op 1680x1050 en some ook 1280x1024. De xorg.conf wordt daarbij angepast door een kde achtige gui van XFdrake. Daarnaast heb ik bij elke driver de xorg.conf met de hand gemodifieerd om de juiste resoluties in de conf file te krijgen.

Met de org > vesa driver kan ik1680x1050 instellen maar dan verzet hij dat zelf naar 1600x1200.

Ik denk dat ik al iets verder ben. Het package dkms-ait_legacy geinstalleerd. Bij initialisatie van de driver vermeld ie

Ik denk dat het uiteindelijk gelukt is. Een screenshot nemen toont mij uiteindelijk een resolutie van 1680x1050 en het ziet er ook scherper uit. Scrollen gaat zonder stoten. Indien je het screen shot hierbij gesloten bekijkt, zijn de grijze zones, vb bij de 'r' of de 'i' te wijten aan het herschalen van het beeld of aan anti aliasing?

Een hint aan andere mensen die met dezelfde problemen zitten:
  • /usr/share/ati bevat logs van de installatie
  • /var/log/ gevat logs van oa het starten van X.
  • het aticonfig tool doet niet altijd wat hij beweert te doen. check zelf de xorg.conf
  • verwijder andere drivers! klinkt raar maar deze packages lopen toch in de weg
  • wat XFdrake aangeeft als instellingen is niet altijd correct ivm de conf file
  • ati zet de composite optie aan. Afzetten!
