Error Reading Fixed Disk!!
Has this problem bugged you?? I bet it did. Not having found a satisfactory solution on the net, I decided to put this on my webpage. Its relevant to you if you are getting a SCARY message "ERROR READING FIXED DISK", when you try to run the fdisk command. Its also relevant to you if at any point of time you want to completely wipe off your hard-drive and delete any earlier partitions.
Well, I see that you partitioned your hard drive using the "fdisk" command and somehow you find that you didn't do it the way you wanted and you want to start all over. You want to get back your hard drive as one solid piece right!! Run fdisk again. Enable the FAT32 system. If you cross this point, well and good. But, if you got that scary message, I bet you want my tonic.
Try and get hold of a resource CD or a boot floppy disk that has HDDUTIL in it. (A resource boot CD usually has this. Dig for this CD. Your vendor must have handed this to you the time you bought your pc). Enter the set-up of your system when you restart. Change the boot sequence to floppy or CD ROM first (the kind of boot disk you have). Look if the boot disk has HDDUTIL. If it is there, you are done. change your directory to HDDUTIL, then to CLEAN. And in the sub-directory CLEAN type in the command CLEAN1K. This will restore your hard-drive to one piece, without any partitions. I presume you do not have any data on the disk, because IT WILL BE LOST when you run CLEAN1K and accept it.
That's it. Having done this, you may check the status of your hard-drive using the command "fdisk /status /x". Its one piece, isn't it? so now you want to thank me....don't you? I'm not asking you to pay me, but I hope you'd sure want to write to me!!!
If this does not work out for you, even then you'd want to write to me for an alternative solution, isn't it?
The program CLEAN.EXE (same as clean1k.exe) can be downloaded from here.
Recently, I got to know from Paul Mundt (a person whom I had corresponded with regarding Error Reading Fixed Disk) about another program, called wipeout. It should also be able to restore your hard disk. To access this program click here. Though I haven't tried it myself, I'm sure it should work. There's no harm in trying right!!
