VMware Announces New Product for Apple Mac OS X Users

New Intel-based Macs will be able to Simultaneously Run Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris

SAN FRANCISCO and PALO ALTO, Calif., August 7, 2006 — VMware, Inc., the global leader in software for industry-standard virtualized desktops and servers, today announced a new product that will enable Intel-based Macs to run x86 operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris, in virtual machines at the same time as Mac OS X. VMware will demo the product today during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2006 in San Francisco.

“We are excited to bring our desktop platform product to Apple Macs. The demand for this has been unbelievable and it is clearly front and center for Mac users,” said Diane Greene, president of VMware. “VMware is in the business of providing the most advanced and robust virtualization platforms as well as phenomenal add-on functionality that leverages our virtualization platform. This announcement brings our desktop platform and add-on capabilities to Mac users, and it will allow them to run a wide variety of operating systems without rebooting. Mac users who also use the PC will be able to use this product to consolidate onto the Mac.”

The new Mac product is based on VMware’s robust and advanced virtualization technology, shipping for more than seven years and used by more than four million people today. Moving forward, virtual machines created with any of VMware’s products will run on Intel-based Macs and, similarly, non-Mac OS X virtual machines created with the new product will run on the latest versions of other VMware platform products.

In addition, Mac users will be able to leverage more than 250 virtual appliances for solutions such as security, load balancing, collaboration, databases, development, communications and business applications that are available for download from VMware Technology Network (VMTN) at www.vmtn.net. Virtual appliances are pre-built, pre-configured and ready-to-run software applications, all packaged within virtual machines that can be run using VMware virtualization products, including VMware Player and VMware Server which are both available for free download at www.vmware.com/download/.

Pricing and Availability
The beta release of this product is expected to be available later this year. Interested parties will be able to sign up for early access by visiting www.vmware.com/macos.

Dit heeft 2 hele grote voordelen tegenover Parralels...

1. Je kan je bestaande VMX'en houden (als je die van een gewone machine al had)

2. De server en de Player, zijn gratis!

Plus als je kijkt naar de reputatie van VMware, dit moet wel goed komen denk ik

Jammer, toen ik je topic zag, dacht ik dat het eindelijk uit was...

maaruh, wat wil je hiermee bereiken? Discussieren over VMWare? Problemen zal nog wel niemand ondervinden omdat het nog niet uit is...

Het is nu idd nog ff wachten, maar zo lang zal het niet meer duren...

Het is toch wel leuk dan een grote speler zoals VMware zich nu ook op de Mac gaat richten, en dit is meer een topic, om het duidelijk te maken dat het er aan komt, en als het zover is, dan komen de problemen vanzelf denk ik

Het programma werkt wel aardig en emuleert even snel met Windows 98 als VMWare onder Windows XP. Erg mooi product, vooral de herbruikbaarheid van de bestaande virtual machines van mijn XP devbak.

Jammer dat het alleen voor Intel mac's is. Zou wel eens keer zoiets willen zien voor de G4/G5

Maar het gebruikt dus geen virtualisatie zoals Parallels? Daarover kan ik in dit bericht niets vinden, alleen dat het al 7 jaar wordt gebruikt (en dus niet de snelle vorm van virtualisatie kan zijn). Dan zie ik het nut van dit product niet zo, want dan is het niet vooruit te branden ten opzichte van Parallels.

Parallels is een lightweight hypervisor, dwz. dat parallels zelf vangt niet de geheugencalls af, maar dat doet de hardware (VT in dit geval). Hiervoor heb je dus verplicht hardware ondersteuning voor nodig. VMWare daarintegen is een complete hypervisor die zelf ook in de software de calls kan afvangen. Hierdoor is de performance minder, maar ben je niet gebonden aan specifieke hardware. Gelukkig heeft VMWare wel ondersteuning voor pacifica en VT, dus als je een processor met virtualisatie technologie hebt, word dit ook allemaal lekker in de hardware gedaan.

Het performance verschil tussen parallels en VMWare zal dus niet zo groot zijn, want de meest intensieve taak (calls naar geheugenadressen omnummeren) word door de zelfde technologie op de zelfde processor gedaan.
