[yum] teveel updates

Ik heb net mijn oude developmentservertje een update gegeven naar Fedora Core 5 (eerst zat ik op 4). Alles is netjes uitgerold.

Maar zodra ik wil gaan updaten met yum krijgt yum 769 updates voor zijn kiezen! (609 MB). Ik had al het idee dat dit misschien wel eens overkill zou kunnen worden voor de processor. Ik heb de update toch maar doorgezet. Na enkele minuten (zodra alle data binnen was) begon het al. De server begon te stotteren, apache en vsftpd gaven steeds corrupte dingen af, samba begon te stotteren. Ik ben meteen weer met een andere ssh shell gaan inloggen om de load te bekijken. deze stond op 16.54 (!). Met ctrl-C heb ik toen meteen geprobeerd yum af te breken maar dit werkte niet meer. Lokaal inloggen (via een KVM) werkte ook niet meer. Zodra ik de loginnaam root had ingetikt duurde het meer dan 60 seconden voordat de password prompt kwam, na 60 seconden wordt het afgebroken dus die log-in was onmogelijk. Plotseling viel toen ook ssh uit waardoor ik de hele server niet meer kon besturen. Op het aangelosten scherm van de KVM kwamen allerlei meldingen over "out-of-memory" etc.

Ik heb toen de server een harde reset gegeven en opnieuw opgestart. Alles werkt nog, maar als ik dus weer ga updaten kan ik verwachten dat weer alles vastloopt. Kan ik ergens in yum oid iets instellen dat Yum maximaal 20 paketten tegelijk mag updaten. Ik heb man yum gelezen maar dit maakte me niet erg veel wijzer.

Ik denk dat het aantal pakketen je opbreekt, eerder het feit dat yum je machine onderuit trekt, wat op zich raar is.
Heb je al geprobeerd yum te renicen met behulp van het commando 'nice' ?
Andere manier is denk ik de updates met de hand downloaden en deze handmatig up te graden, maar dat is niet het leukste om te zien

Wat als je handmatig updates installeert? Bv. een aantal pakketten per keer? Dat is veel werk, maar toch...

Alle updates zijn inmiddels al gedownload, tot daar zijn er namelijk geen problemen. Helaas draait bij het installeren alles helemaal de soep in. Alles handmatig installeren zou wel een optie zijn, maar daar voel ik niet echt veel voor als het automatisch kan

Ik had nog nooit van nice gehoord, dus ik heb de manual geraadpleegd en ga nu alles laten draaien met het volgende commande

Als ik met yum 3 of 4 pakketten doe is er geen probleem, dus ik denk dat de processor of de schijven over hun nek gaan oid. Er is genoeg vrije ruimte op de server lijkt me. Yum geeft aan dat er vor 609 MB aan updates moet worden opgehaald. Verder zijn /usr en /var vrij schoon

Waar slaat Yum zijn voorlopige bestanden op? Ik zou toch denken aan /tmp, en dat is in totaal 190 MB

Op het moment het ik alle http ftp etc services gestopt en yum draait nu. Er varandert helemaal niks op tmp. Verder meen ik met ook te herinneren dat yum alles in /var/cahce/yum opslaat

Hij is nu bij de transaction test na het downloaden, dus het installeren zal zo beginnen. De load op de machine is nu 3.40. Normaal is dit ongeveer 0.5, maar het is al veel beter dan de 16.54 van eerst.

Het RAM gebruik is nu 94% voor Linux in het totaal. De swap is niet in gebruik op het moment. De verhoudingen binnen het RAM geheugen liggen als volgt. Deze lijken me vrij redelijk

inmiddels is de load gezakt tot 2.36. Yum staat nog steeds bij zijn Transaction Test. de shell reageert wel nog. Ik kan alles in de background zetten en weer terughalen naar de foreground, dus er is niks vastgelopen. Hij is gewoon een beetje traag

Dit is de output van het commando nice -n 12 yum update -y staat onderaan dit bericht. Het is nogal lang maar ik denk dat jullie er misschien wel iets aan hebben. Zelf heb ik het idee dat er ergens iets niet goed zit met de schijfruimte op /usr, maar /usr heeft nog 833 MB vrije ruimte. Ik denk dat het laaste getal (404 MB) de benodigde vrije ruimte is. Deze is er toch nog.

Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ik alle getallen bij elkaar moet optellen, dan zit je toch wel aan de 1 TB en dat lijkt me onwaarschijnlijk voor een update.

Dit zijn trouwens de paketten die yum wilt updaten. Opgehaald met yum check-update.
Omdat er schijnbaar nog een heleboel core paketten zijn lijkt het me dat de upgrade naar FC 5 nog niet echt is voltooid. Als ik wil inloggen in de text shell geeft hij toch aan dat hij heeft geboot met Fedora Core 5 (Bordeaux). ?¿

yum update vsftpd* werkt trouwens niet, hij wil dan toch veel meer updaten. Ik probeer nu eens alleen alle core paketten te updaten door alle andere dingen op een chmod van 0000 te zetten. Eens kijken of dat werkt. Na het eten weten we meer. hoop ik....

De rpms van yum worden opgeslagen in /var/cache/yum/*/packages, de hoge load komt waarschijnlijk van het uitrekenen van de dependencies.

Ik denk, zoals al eerder gezegd is, dat je toch beter een paar pakketten met de hand kan updaten.
In je lijst staat bv ook rpm wat een hell of a job kan zijn om te updaten.

Begin eens met het updaten van de gibc-pakketten, met alle deps resolved.
Daarna yum proberen. Lukt dit niet, los dan de dependencies op. Soms moet je er pakketten bij installeren, ipv updaten. (Tip: www.rpmfind.net)

Ik heb zelf vaker geupdate van redhat/Fedora x naar fedora x (zonder yum, maar met tig losse rpms), Het kost veel tijd, maar zolang je niet teveel rpm --force gebruikt moet je er nog wel stabiel kunnen uitkomen.

Ik denk niet dat de update het probleem is. Ik denk eerder dat de hoeveelheid updates in combinatie met het gigantische mem-gebruik in yum zelf het probleem is. Topicstarter, voor Fedora kun je ook optioneel apt gebruiken, probeer dat eens. Installeer simpelweg apt, voeg de repositories toe die je ook voor yum gebruikt, en gebruik apt-get update en dist-upgrade.

Met name voor machines met weinig geheugen (bv. 128MB plus UI) is yum simpelweg te zwaar voor de grote updates. Ik vind yum persoonlijk geinig gedaan, en op zich is het schattig dat het theoretisch beter is dan apt, maar uiteindelijk blijft yum qua performance een kolossaal onding dat totaal ongeschikt is voor enig serieus werk.

Voor de leuk, vergelijk ook even synaptic met yumex. Allebei erg compleet, yumex is zelfs iets schattiger, maar uiteindelijk ben je 't wachten zo zat dat je de andere irritaties in synaptic voor lief neemt en gewoon toch weer apt gebruikt. Yum is een performance-ramp. .

ik heb de laatste dagen via yum toch nog het eens en ander kunnen forceren. Zo heb ik inmiddels ervoor gezorgd dat ik helemaal zeker wist dat yum alle updates van Fedora 4 had geïnstalleerd door deze repositories te vervangen:

Ik zit nou lekker remote te werken dus echt opschieten doet het allemaal ook niet. Ik heb na de volledige update van FC4 de repositories van FC5 weer teruggezet. De server heeft 320 MB RAM (1*64 en 1* 256) en draait geen X oid.

Na draaien yum zijn we weer een stapje verder:

Ik ben dus maar even gaan zoeken naar libcrypto.so.6 die die nodig heeft voor sendmail (valt buiten wat ik geplakt heb). De output is dan dat er in /lib gewoon een libcrypto.so.5 staat.

Ik ben nou wget -r ftp://ftp.quicknet.nl/pub.../i386/os/Fedora/RPMS/lib* aan het doen om te kijken of het wel werkt als ik rpm -Fhv *.rpm doe wel werkt. Even wachten tot het downloaden af is. Ook dependencies foutmeldingen van andere libs.

Nou doe ik even yum install apt. Geenresultaat, schijnbaar is apt voor Fedora gecancelled . Ik heb nou even een andere yum configuratie toegevoegd (http://www.fedorafaq.org/#yumconf) in de hoop dat het dan wel werkt. Hij draait nou weer....even wachten
