Het probleem is opgelost, was eigenlijk heel simpel.

I rebooted their machine this morning and the *REAL* desktop appeared briefly so I right-clicked on it. Eventually, the desktop was hijacked again, but I did get the pop-up menu.
I clicked on properties, went to the Desktop tab and clicked the "Customize Desktop" button. In the subsequent Desktop Items dialog I clicked on the Web tab and there were two items in the Web Pages list. One was checkmarked: Desktop Uninstall.
I un-checked it and applied the change and the hijack was gone. I didn't choose to remove it because I suspect something will try to re-apply it at the next boot and I don't know what would happen if it wasn't there. Bottom line: this appears to be some sort of exploit of Active Desktop.

Misschien iets te laat, maar via je Control Panel kan je ook gewoon je Display settings wijzigen. Scheelt weer een hoop gezeik qua timing.
