[XP] Kan installatie SP2 niet voltooien

Wanneer ik SP2 voor WindowsXP probeer te installaren krijg ik een foutmelding. Deze foutmelding vind pas plaats helemaal op het einde van de installatie:

De installatie van Service Pack voor Windows XP is mislukt. 
Als gevolg hiervan is Windows XP nu slechts gedeeltelijk bijgewerkt.
De installatie van het servicepack voor Windows is niet voltooid. 
Dit systeem is instabiel. Ga naar onderdeel Software 
van het Configuratiescherm en verwijder het servicepack, 
of neem contact op met uw systeembeheerder.

Dit gebeurd zowel als ik met de automatische update probeer SP2 te installeren en ook wanneer ik eerst SP2 in z'n geheel download en dan een installatie uitvoer.

De eerste keer dat dit gebeurde dacht ik "Ik reboot eerst eens een keertje en kijk dan wel verder". Bij het starten van Windows kwam er een foutmelding. "Kan WinSrv32.exe niet vinden".
Via de XP CD-Rom en de console kon ik de SP2 installatie alsnog ongedaan maken.

De rest van de windows updates heb ik wel allemaal geinstalleerd.

Tegelijk met dit probleem, volgde er een ander probleem. Bij het starten van Windows Media Player krijg ik de foutmelding "Er is een internet toepassingsfout opgetreden".
Via vele sites kwam ik op verschillende manieren uit om dit op te lossen, enkel werken ze geen van allen in mijn geval.

Een nieuwe installatie Windows zie ik niet zo zitten aangezien ik nogal veel services, programma's e.d. heb draaien en het veel werk kost om alles opnieuw te installeren.

Het gaat trouwens om een IBM G40 Laptop met Windows XP OEM installatie.

Misschien een mooie tijd om toch je machine opnieuw te installeren en na de installatie van al je pakketjes en services een image te maken, dan maakt het in het vervolg niet uit als er zoiets gebeurd. Image terug en klaar.

Dat is de eerste foutmelding die je krijgt of krijg je eerder ook nog een fout (bv. dat je atapi32.sys in use is?)

Het is de allereeste foutmelding. Het lijkt allemaal goed te gaan. Elke stap wordt afgerond en de progressbar vult zich compleet.
Pas helemaal op het laatste doet deze fout zich voor.

Kijk eens naar de comamndline switches van update.exe - misschien is er een mogelijkheid om verbose logging aan te zetten ofzo en kan je op die manier wat meer inzicht krijgen in wat er mis gaat?

Helaas niet. Alleen quiet, passive en nog wat andere commandlines zijn mogelijk.

Ik draai regelmatig Anti-spyware programma's (Hitman Pro, laatste update) en heb een up-to-date virus-scanner geinstalleerd

Heb je misschien zelf updates zitten verwijderen ofzo?

Je zou eens kunnen proberen om de hier boven genoemde updates te de-installeren

Naar mijn weten heb ik nooit updates verwijderd. In 'Software' staan ze er ook niet tussen alszijnde geinstalleerd. De mappen in C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$ van deze updates bestaan wel, echter zijn ze wel leeg.

Ik heb de updates van de microsoft site geplukt. De eerste (WindowsXP-KB891781-x86-NLD) installeert niet.
"KB891781 encountered a problem and needs to close".
Zowel in Veilige Modus als na een reboot, blijft deze fout.

De tweede (WindowsXP-KB901017-x86-NLD.exe) is nu wel goed geinstalleerd. Als ik de csvpack.log (van SP2 install) bekijk staat er al 1 foutmelding minder in.
