Firstly, I am typing this in English as I tend to get things backwards when typing in Nederlands. I welcome replies in Nederlands or English, the reason I am posting here is that I have a Dutch version of XP.

OK, the problem I have been trying to troubleshoot is that I can't get my new laptop to communicate with my wireless router.

It was connecting, when my boss delivered the laptop he had it up and going within minutes, although laughing due to my "onbeveiligd" wireless network. I think that the connection disappearred after a rebooted the laptop.

Problem is now that I have a red X on "draadloos" icon in the "taakbalk", and in the "netwerkverbindingen" window I have a "Niet verbonden" message.

( Windows XP Home Edition Versie 2002 Service Pack 2, router is an E-tech cheapo jobbie )

I can connect the laptop to the router with a cable, and I have an iBook that is connecting to the router wirelessly.

Running "ipconfig" gives "Status van medium . . . . . . . . : medium ontknoppeld"

Googling that suggests that maybe there is a driver problem, I have tried deleting the hardware then restarting (if I did that correctly, I'm not sure), but it has just meant that I have now "Draadloze netwerverbinding 3" in the Netwerkverbinding window.

There are several posibilities that may be causing the problem ( as far as know )....

#1 I have messed everything up due to being a total moron when trying to network. ( running "system restore" is an option )

#2 Driver issue? ( seems unlikely as it was connecting )

#3 Firewall issue? ( seems unlikely as I can connect with cable )

#4 Router configuration is screwed up? ( quite a possibility as I have been trying absolutely everything to try and get this "aan de praat" )

My major problem is that I don't know the correct order to troubleshoot this one, too many years working in an office with a network admin solving all these sorts of problems, any tips along the lines of "Try this first" would be greatly appreciated.

Was already started, stopped it and restarted it, problem remains.

( I have also tried assigning a static IP to the wireless btw )

Right mousebutton on your 'draadloze netwerkverbinding' icon in the tray next to the clock and press 'beschikbare netwerken weergeven'.

Windows will show you a list of current wireless networks in your area. Do you see your network?

nope.....
Er zijn geen draadloze netwerken binnen bereik gevonden.

Zorg ervoor dat de schalelaar voor draadloos netwerkverkeer op uw computer is ingeschakeld.
I can see the wireless network with the iBook.

Do you have like an on-off switch for your wireless interface? What kind of laptop do you own? I can press fn+f2 to shut down the wireless interface.

OK, it suddenly showed up, I'm now connected (although at this moment with a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address, but that's another issue).

So it suddenly started working.

:?

......................intermittent fault, some wire loose somewhere?

I did run hitman pro for the first time and during troubleshooting I've had my firewalls down.

Next wierdness is that I can't seem to apply a static IP to the wireless modem, running ipconfig /renew still gets the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx .............

.............dammit

you can only change the modems ip in the modems (web)interface
ipconfig /renew is only for networkcards with dhcp

try logging in to the modem and change it there

OK, it seems that ipconfig was running a little slow ( or something )

Have assigned the wireless modem the IP address 192.168.1.111, but it still won't talk to the modem.

Good news is that I am still connected to it ( using WEP encryption no less B) )

Could well be a router configuration issue, or maybe a firewall issue.

Question, would kicking XP off this machine and reverting to good old Win 2000 make things any easier?

Doesn't appear that iBooks running Panther like WEP encryption btw. (problem #12 out of a seemingly never ending series)

I would normally just reset the modem/router/accesspiont and start all over, just from the beginning. Like when you are using mac-address filteringer you will be able to get connected, but won't get an ip address.

It should work just fine after the reset, than (step-by-step) add some security messures.

Try removing WEP encryption from the wireless modem for a minute, see if that works. I had the same problem last week getting a Dell laptop and a Linksys modem to connect. It seems a connection can still be made, even with a wrong WEP key. (Same as that the light on your NIC will lit when a cable is connected, but it does not mean you will receive an IP address.)

In my case I solved the problem when installing XP SP2, which has a greatly improved Wireless Zero Configuration thnigy.

About the previous problem not seeing the network at all:

You might have USA-based drivers installed for your wireless card. Fyi: In USA, the use of channel 13 is not allowed, so not activated in the driver as well.

However, most/many european accespoints do have their default channel set at AUTO. It might occur it selects 13 as the best available channel, causing your notebook unable to see it. If the AP switches to another channel, it shows back up.

If you can't find the AP anymore, might caused by this.....

Interesting, although the configuration screen from the router (which I don't trust 100%) says that it is using channel 9, which I would assume rules out that as a possible cause.

As an update, taking advice from a post above I have the WEP encryption, then right clicked >>> "Herstellen" on the wireless modem, I am now back to the status from my first post, as in red X in the icon tray, which is sort of good news in a backwards sort of way.

I can't believe the amount of hours I have spent on this.

With WEP encryption disabled I get the red X, and can't see any networks.

Reset as in pull the plug out for a bit, or reset as in return to factory settings?

Where do you disable WEP? You should do it in the modem.

Oops, I'd disabled it on the router.

Er, I have now disabled it on the modem, still not getting an usefull IP.

I can see a couple of "onbeveiligd" networks however, so I'll hold back on resetting my router for the moment and try and connect to them. ( I can just see myself losing all internet connections totally in which case I would probably disappear from this thread and the internet in general for an "onbeperkt" time )

I'm in, disabled WEP on modem and router, am typing this on wireless !!!!!!!!!!! :) :)

I am however not much wiser as to what issue was causing the problems, and still consider myself to be a moron when it comes to networking.

Many many thanks to all who helped, this is the quickest support forum I have ever come across.

Eehmmmm the OP is using a cheapass Etech dingetje which IIRC is ADSL modem + wireless router in one. On which he successfully disabled WEP ;-)

Now that you found out what caused the problem I advise you to try and get it work with WEP enabled, as it is not wise to leave your wireless lan open.

some access points can "hide" as a security?
after both ends to factory defaults (which you did, probably) you can start using WEB again properly.

I have no idea what caused the problem, as it appears to have been a combination of things, not the least the surprise seemingly random offer of networks, as if the "modem" was faulty all this time.

Question, would filtering the macs have the same effect as using WEP encryption ( I'm still not obtaining an IP address when WEP is enabled)?

Secondly, what are the advantages in NOT buying the cheapest router available?

As in leaving the field in the configuration screen blank?

Where do you lot learn all this stuff, do theey teach it in school these days, or have you all had to learn this stuff from scratch?

Ssid broadcasting is an option that the more 'advanced' wireless hardware has. Only users who know the ssid kan connect to it, instead of everybody seeing it. Just leaving the field blank will not work.

Wep and filtering the macs isn't te same, both are security messures that can prevent someone to use your wireless network. The problem is that a mac address can be spoofed, and WEP can be cracked within a few hours. Using both options makes it difficult, but not 'unhackable'.

I learn all this by doing it, worked from mijn 15th till my 18th birthday at the technical support of a computer shop (building computers/repairing/support etc). I also layed down allot of them here in the neighbourhood and at friends and i own 2 wireless routers (linksys and asus).
