PC Pro , the German PC Magazine, has published an excellent review of all available CPU's in their latest issue. One of the remarkable tests that they have done, was the one with "MP3 producer", an MP3 encoder (encoding: turning CD music in to MP3). Here are the results.
CPU Time (seconds) Performance (PMMX 233=100)
Athlon 1000 97 798
Athlon 800 121 640
PIII 933 123 629
Athlon 700 137 565
PIII 600 EB 188 412
PIII 600 (katmai) 194 399
Celeron 600 199 389
Celeron 533 228 339
K6-2 550 405 191
MP3 encoding seems to fit well in the Athlon's L1-cache, and is extremely FPU hungry. The Athlon 600 did the encoding in 160 seconds (480%), 16% faster than the PIII.
The MP3 encoding algorithm does not fit in the PIII's L1-cache (big performance penalty compared to the Athlon), and it seems that the bandwidth of the 66 MHz FSB of the Celeron CPU is slighly too low (compare with katmai). The K6-2 is almost twice as slow as the celeron. The Athon is clearly the CPU for music enthusiasts ...
