Help with product on a article (SATA)

Hello tweakers-Team,

I have a question regarding following article:
reviews: Comparison of nine Serial ATA RAID 5 adapters

In this article you tested following product: Areca ARC-1120. (Yes, I want to buy this controller :-) )
This Controller has 4 ports for SATA-II cables but it could handle up to 8 harddiscs?
How is this possible?

Someone could help me finding an answer?

and an 8-port Marvell 88SX6081 SATA-II controller

I think it has 8 ports

The controller is a 8 ports controller and has 8 ports, not 4. When looking at the picture, you see just 4 connections, but they are double. Look at the last page of the article and you'll see more details.


This is a close-up of a different controller, but you can see they are double.
