First of all, Bluetooth in Windows XP is a complete and total frustrating experience. I bought 3 different bluetooth adapters, until I finally got one to work right. The one I recommend is the D-Link one, since they are about the only one that actually gives you something that is easy to understand and works with the widdcomm drivers.
Secondly, thanks for the link to the post on the microsoft knowledge base about the ghosted com ports. I knew that was the problem, but I had no idea how to fix it. I had 20 different com ports from my previous bluetooth failures that I deleted.
Heres how I got it working(Note:I'm using the WIDCOMM drivers and getting those to work is a whole other can of worms.)
I used the post above about getting rid of ghosted ports, so this isn't my idea. Just wanted to clarify for those still confused(Microsoft's help is confusing even.)
1. Right Clck on My Computer and click properties.
2. Click on the Advanced Tab
3. Click on Environmental Variables
4. Under System Variables click new.
5. In the variable name box type : devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices
6. in the value box type: 1
Then click OK. Then goto the Device Manager and Under the View Menu, you should see "View Hidden Devices"
Go under the Com Ports section, and delete everything but your ACTUAL COM PORTS, even the bluetooth ones.
Then right click on the Bluetooth Icon in your taskbar, goto Advanced Configuration, then goto Local Services. If Bluetooth Serial Port is still listed, delete it. Then click Add Serial Service and it should add a Com port in the low numbers.
Thanks to everyone on this board, I FINALLY got Bluetooth Activesync working.
Now, if I could get Bluetooth Networking connected right, then I'd be in business. This whole Bluetooth thing is supposed to be easy, but leave it to Microsoft to complicate the matter.
