With Aureal appearing to be fading out of the scene, I am very interested to see what will appear to take its place as the primary competitor to Creative Labs. Beyond all the normal specs in any current generation 3D sound card, it has one that stands out. All sources are able to be output digitally as a true 5.1 Dolby Digital signal. Here I find myself needing to explain Dolby Digital (AC-3) a little bit, as there is a lot of misconception around it. Just having digital out does not mean you get 5.1 out. As a matter of fact DVD's often state "Dolby Digital AC-3" on them, while being a plain stereo or even mono source. It only truly specifies that it is communicating via one of the standard methods that are a part of the AC-3 specification. To date, there are no soundcards that output anything other than software decoded DVD playing to a true 5.1 channel digital out. The Thunderbird Avenger actually outputs all sources as 5.1. Probably most of the other manufacturers of PC soundcards did not feel it was worth the cost of licensing the Dolby Digital algorithms to do this, but Philips is already licensing all of them for their consumer audio products, allowing them to be used in the PC products as well.
