The crowd this week in San Francisco at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference seemed mildly excited by the prospect of its favorite computer company turning to Intel processors. The CEO of Adobe asked why it had taken Apple so long to make the switch? Analysts on Wall Street were generally positive, with a couple exceptions. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE!? Are these people drunk on Flav-r-Ade? Yes. It is the legendary Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field at work. And this time, what's behind the announcement is so baffling and staggering that it isn't surprising that nobody has yet figured it out until now.

Question 1: What happened to the PowerPC's supposed performance advantage over Intel?

Eerst loopt Apple met de nieuwe G5s de P4s af te kraken, en nu ineens is de G5 te traag?

Question 2: What happened to Apple's 64-bit operating system?

Question 3: Where the heck is AMD?

If Apple is willing to embrace the Intel architecture because of its performance and low power consumption, then why not go with AMD, which equals Intel's power specs, EXCEEDS Intel's performance specs AND does so at a lower price point across the board? Apple and AMD makes far more sense than Apple and Intel any day.

Question 4: Why announce this chip swap a year before it will even begin for customers?

ERG sterk punt: Deze te vroege aankondiging gaat ze kosten, een deel van de potentiele kopers zullen hun koop nu (minstens) een jaar uitstellen...

Question 5: Is this all really about Digital Rights Management?

Als Intel zelf al aangeeft dat het van mening is dat DRM thuishoort in software, ga je toch afvragen of dit eigenlijk wel iets te maken heeft met de switch...

De conclusie die Robert Cringely trekt is verassend, maar gezien z'n onderbouwing zeker aannemelijk:

Microsoft.

Microsoft comes into this because Intel hates Microsoft. It hasn't always been that way, but in recent years Microsoft has abused its relationship with Intel and used AMD as a cudgel against Intel. Even worse, from Intel's standpoint Microsoft doesn't work hard enough to challenge its hardware. For Intel to keep growing, people have to replace their PCs more often and Microsoft's bloatware strategy just isn't making that happen, especially if they keep delaying Longhorn.

Enter Apple. This isn't a story about Intel gaining another three percent market share at the expense of IBM, it is about Intel taking back control of the desktop from Microsoft.

Intel is fed up with Microsoft. Microsoft has no innovation that drives what Intel must have, which is a use for more processing power.

Volgens de IBM roadmap bij de introductie van de G5 zou er inmiddels al een hogere snelheid bereikt moeten zijn. IBM kan dit niet waarmaken, inmiddels loopt de G5 achter op de Intel.

AMD zou niet genoeg chips kunnen garanderen, niet voldoende productiecappaciteit.

Er zullen programma's aangepast moeten worden, anders werken die niet, dan zullen developers toch op tijd moeten weten dat er wat anders aan komt. Een release zonder software kan niet goed gaan.

Dat uitstellen is nog maar de vraag, nieuwe systemen hebben meestal kinderziektes, nu kopen is dus misschien verstandiger. Uitstel van aankoop betekend overigens ook dat als x86 apples komen een grote omzet, en dus succesvolle verkoopcijfers, gegarandeerd zijn.

Question 5: Is this all really about Digital Rights Management?

Als Intel zelf al aangeeft dat het van mening is dat DRM thuishoort in software, ga je toch afvragen of dit eigenlijk wel iets te maken heeft met de switch...

Heb ik zelf niet zo mee gekregen dat dit een rede voor de overstap is. Ik kan me wel voorstellen dat DRM hardwarematig apple wat meer onderhandelingsruimte geeft voor iTunes. DRM is daar erg belangrijk voor. Zonder DRM krijgen ze geen liedjes van de muziek branche. Ik kan me voorstellen dat er meer vertrouwen is in een hardware DRM dan een software DRM.

Heb die column een tijd geleden al gelezen, maar de auteur heeft zijn huiswerk duidelijk niet goed gedaan. Het is gewoon de zoveelste (slechte) conspiracy theory. Geen nieuwspost waard, en al helemaal niet gekoppeld aan een verhaal van serieuze bron zoals de NYT.

Eigenlijk heb je het zelf al gezegd, maar ik vat het nog even samen.
Vandaag is de G5 sneller dan de P4.

Echter: de G5 kan niet in laptops gebruikt worden, en de G5 zelf krijgt problemen met koeling als deze hoger wordt geklokt. De beloofde 3GHz is niet (op tijd) gehaald).
Nogmaals: dat is vandaag geen probleem.
Volgend jaar verwacht Steve Jobs echter dat de "performace per Watt" bij Intel's x86 vele malen beter zal zijn dan bij IBM's PPC.

Het enige punt was dat deze speculaties bij mij wel "doel troffen". Mijn reactie was "hier zit wat in". Daarom dacht ik dat het misschien wel nuttig was om even onder de aandacht van de nieuwsposters / redactie te brengen. Meer niet. Dit is en blijft Frontpage Algemeen dus niet de plek om hierover te discussieren.
