[2000] Update error 0x80070080 no child process to wait for*

Sinds enige tijd ben ik weer bezig om onze Windows servers van nieuwe updates te voorzien. Helaas loop ik daarbij deze keer tegen een probleem aan. Uiteraard op Google, GoT en MS gezocht met de error code maar daar kwam ik helaas niet verder mee.

Omgeving:
Windows 2000 Servers met SP 4 en updates tot enkele maanden geleden.
Draait TS en Citrix op
Updates worden binnengehaald via WindowsUpdate (via configuratiescherm, software)
McAfee Anti Virus

Probleem:
Windows Updates worden gedownload, installatie start en eindigd met de foutmelding dat de installatie is mislukt. Uit het windowsupdate log komt de volgende melding:

"Error 0x80070080 There are no child processes to wait for."

Hebben jullie enig idee wat dit is of welke zaken ik nog meer moet testen? Het verwijderen van alle bestanden uit WUtemp en het opnieuw downloaden hielpen niet. Reboot heeft ook geen effect. Fout doet zich op meerdere systemen voor.

is de installatie ook daadwerkelijk mislukt? het lijkt me gewoon een melding dat er geen bestanden meer zijn om te installen, of dat er nog 1 verwacht wordt, maar die niet gedowned is ofzo...

Ik zie ze niet terug komen onder add/remove software. In de installatie geschiedenis staan ze ook als mislukt (op Windows Update). Moet/kan ik dit nog ergens anders checken?

Het downloaden lijkt dus goed te gaan alleen de installatie faalt. Ik zal de errorcode nog eens door google/ms halen. Mocht men in de tussentijd als tips hebben dan hoor ik die graag
Ben bezig om MBSA te downloaden maar is volgens mij niet meer nodig om te bepalen of de patch geinstalleerd is. Het lijkt er op dat installeren fout gaat.

"copy the psapi.dll from another Windows 2000 system into the C:\winnt\system32
directory on the Windows 2000 client machine and then reboot"

PSAPI.DLL is a library that is used to enumerate processes. PS stands for Platform
SDK. This tool originated from the Windows SDK (Software Development Kit). API of
course is Application Programming interface. Since PSAPI.DLL is used to enumerate
processes, it is used by many applications for enumerating processes. In this case,
it is being used by UPDATE.EXE to enumerate the currently running processes without
which it will not be able to update the required files. Since it is looking for
PSAPI.DLL to do this enumeration and cannot find it, it errors out.

Ik denk dat je path-variable niet goed gedefineerd is. Uit je printscreen is te zien dat gezocht wordt naar de juiste DLL in de directorys die gedefineerd zijn in de PATH-variabele. De maximale lengte van deze string is overigens 2047 karakters, dit zul je misschien nog niet halen, maar.. de twee entry in de PATH variable is een . (ja punt )

Eerst komt de temp-dir waarin de update gedownload is, er volgt een ; en hierna komt een .
Deze entry lijkt me niet juist. Ik kan me voorstellen dat windows hierdoor over zijn nek gaat...

Ik zie net de laatste replies en had zelf ook al gehoopt dat de file toevoegen in system32 zou helpen Server is aan het rebooten en alles lijkt nu in orde. Final confirmation volgt nog Bedankt allemaal!

Final update: de updates zijn geïnstalleerd en het lijkt allemaal goed te gaan. Overige servers zal ik in de aankomende dagen behandelen. Overigens jammer van MS dat je via zo'n grote omweg bij de uiteindelijke foutmelding uit moet komen.

Over path, de punt kan ik niet terug vinden. Wel zie ik dat in de schermafdruk er 2 punten worden gebruikt, 1 aan het begin van de C:\ paden en een afsluitende punt. Gebruikt MS die als een soort aanhalingstekens? Mocht ik ooit tegen een path probleem aanlopen dan zal ik het nog eens verder uitzoeken, zo op het eerste gezicht lijkt er weinig aan de hand.

Mooi dat het probleem opgelost is! Je zou overigens nog eens in een command-prompt de opdracht "path" kunnen geven. Dit geeft de complete string weer. Als hier ook de . niet tussenstaat is het gewoon een fout in de foutmelding . Overigens denk ik dat de laatse punt bedoeld is om de "zin" mee af te sluiten.
