Ondertussen zijn er al wereldwijd 6 miljoen PS3 consoles verkocht. Vroeger waren er verschillende modellen van de PS3 in omloop, maar de console is tegenwoordig hier in Nederland verkrijgbaar in 1 smaak: het 40GB model voor een prijs van € 399,- zonder spellen. Een opmerking moet geplaatst worden dat de 40GB versie het leven door moet gaan zonder backwards-compatibility van PS2 spellen. PS1 spellen worden nog wel afgespeeld. Sony's onderbouwing voor dit verlies is als volgt: quote: "So it was a big decision," he said of facility's removal, "and we know it is a very emotive subject as lots of people think that backwards compatibility is high on the agenda and yet few really use it." (bron: http://www.ps3focus.nl/v3/bekijk.php?id=6932) Het is onduidelijk of het 80GB model nog in Europa komt die nog wel backwards-compatibility bezit, maar het ziet ernaar uit dat dit niet meer gaat gebeuren omdat Sony langzaam naar 1 model wereldwijd gaat, namelijk het 40GB model. Lees ook eens de FAQ om de verschillen tussen de modellen die nu in omloop zijn te zien. HD Tijdperk Met de komst van de PS3 is de High Definition (HD) Tijdperk voor PlayStation begonnen. HD is een beeldtechniek waarbij het mogelijk is om beelden met een resolutie tot 1920x1080 op het scherm te projecteren. Uiteraard moet je TV wel HD-Ready zijn om dit soort beelden te ontvangen. De PS3 kan ook HD beelden naar de TV versturen en stelt gameontwikkelaars zelfs in staat om games te maken die werken op de hoogst haalbare HD resolutie van 1920x1080 bij 60 beelden per seconden. De meeste games maken echter gebruik van de 1280x720p resolutie wat voor de meeste van ons genoeg kwijl plezier geeft. • Wil je het verschil zien tussen DVD (720x480) en HD (1280x720)? De PS3 Functies De meeste mensen kopen de PS3 om er natuurlijk games op te spelen, maar de PS3 kan meer dan alleen maar gamen. • Films bekijken (in HD kwaliteit) Het is met de PS3 mogelijk om Blu-ray films (films in HD kwaliteit) te kijken. Dit komt omdat de PS3 de enige console is die een Blu-ray drive bezit die dit mogelijk maakt. Blu-Ray is een opslagtechniek die het mogelijk maakt om 50 GB aan data op een optische schijf te zetten. Films in HD kwaliteit vereisen veel meer opslagcapaciteit dan gewone films op DVD. Niet alleen de films maken gebruik van de Blu-ray opslagtechniek, ook de steeds groter wordende games maken hier nu al gebruik van. Het voordeel van het gebruik va opslagtechniek is dat alles aan een game in HD kwaliteit getoond kan worden, en dat een game ontwikkelaars geen zorgen hoeven te maken over de maximale omvang van een spel die bij de andere consoles gelimiteerd is op 9 GB. Voor de PlayStation3 wordt gebruik gemaakt van Xross Media Bar (XMB) welke 8 categorieen kent en stijlvol is vormgegeven. Deze zijn Users, Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Game, Network en Friends. De PS3 biedt de mogelijkheid om een profiel aan te maken voor elke gebruiker voor het doorzoeken van foto's, muziek en films. • Muziek afspelen • Foto's bekijken De PS3 herbergt verschillende mogelijkheden met foto's te bekijken. Via de ingebouwde (enkel 60Gb versie) of externe kaartlezer kun je je geheugenkaarten lezen om vervolgens een fotovoorstelling te starten. Je kan kiezen uit verschillende fotovoorstellingen: normale slideshow, diashow en verschillende fotoboeken gesorteerd op datumtijd waarbij in de eerste versie de foto's van uit het lucht op het boek vallen en bij de tweede versie komen de foto's al bewegend te voorschijn direct in het fotoboek. Verder kan je de foto's ondermeer sorteren op maand, jaar, album. • DLNA client De PS3 kan ook als DLNA client functioneren. Hierdoor is het mogelijk om al je films, muziek en foto's van je PC naar je PS3 toe te streamen via het netwerk. Via deze manier hoef je dus niet in de weer met een portable harddisk of memory stick om je films van je PC op de PS3 te bekijken. DLNA staat ook bekend als uPnP. Om HD materiaal te streamen naar je PS3 wordt wel geadviseerd om je LAN netwerk van je PS3 te gebruiken ipv van de draadloze netwerk connectie. Het enige wat je moet doen is een stukje software installeren op je PC, zoals TVersity, Twonky Vision, WM11 of Nero Digital Home • Internet Browsen Extra PS3 Accessories De PS3 maakt gebruik van de industrie geaccepteerde standaarden waardoor het mogelijk is om accessories draadloos of via een van de vier USB aansluitingen aan de PS3 aan te sluiten. • Draadloze Accessories Zo'n beetje alle draadloze accessories die werken met het Bluetooth 2.0 protocol kunnen worden verbonden aan de PS3. Hierdoor hoef je dus niet speciaal voor de PS3 ontwikkelde accessories te kopen, maar kun je direct je reeds gekochte Bluetooth apparatuur aansluiten. Bluetooth accessories die compatible met de PS3 zijn: headset, remote Control, extra controller, muis en toetsenbord. Maximaal kunnen er 7 apparaten tegelijk via bluetooth met de PS3 verbonden zijn. • USB Accessories Omdat de PS3 beschikt over 4 USB aansluitingen kunnen veel USB accessoires direct aan de PS3 worden aangesloten. Denk hierbij aan een externe hardschijf om je muziek,films of foto's te bekijken, muis en toetsenbord, je MP3 speler (zoals je iPod), een fotoprinter (alleen van epson). • Overige Connectivity Verder is een harde schijf van 60GB aanwezig en zijn er flash memory sloten voor de Memory Stick, CompactFlash en SD/MMC kaarten waarvan ook de foto's, muziek en films gelezen kunnen worden. Tot slot voor de communicatie is er de Gigabit Ethernet aansluiting en Wi-Fi aanwezig. PlayStation Network (PSN) De PS3 is helemaal 'connected' wat betekend dat je hem aan het internet kunt aansluiten zodat je met andere gamers online kunt spelen. Het is de gameontwikkelaar die beslist of een game online mode heeft en wordt niet door Sony opgelegd. Vaak betekend dit dat games waarvan je zou verwachten dat ze een online mode hebben, ook daadwerkelijk één hebben. Met PSN biedt Sony ook een online netwerk om content mee te distribueren zoals, demo's, trailers, updates etc. Ook biedt de store PS1 games en PSN games waar wel voor betaald moet worden. Met PSN games biedt Sony de mogelijkheid voor developers games goedkoop te distribueren naar ons. De PSN games die tot nu toe gedistribueerd zijn, zijn van erg goede kwaliteit en doen niet onder van grote games qua fun-factor. PSN Games voelen aan als old-school games in een nieuw arcade jasje! Zie bijvoorbeeld Calling All Cars en de Amiga remake Super Startdust HD! • PlayStation Store Om deze content te bemachtigen biedt Sony ons de PlayStation Store aan. De Playstation Store biedt wekelijks nieuwe content aan, en kan voor de content veilig betaald worden. De prijzen voor de content zijn voor de kwaliteit die je ervoor terug krijgt dik in orde! Per april wordt de PlayStation Store vernieuwd met een nieuwe gebruiksvriendelijke interface om zo aan de wensen van de gemiddelde tweaker te voldoen. Naast een meer gebruiksvriendelijke interface, wordt met deze vernieuwing de store ook een stuk sneller. Als je een HD-Ready TV hebt kun je het best de PS3 aansluiten via een HDMI kabel. Beeld en geluid worden via deze kabel zonder verlies naar de TV verstuurd in HD kwaliteit. Heb je nog een gewone TV? Bij de PS3 is een composiet-scart kabel meegeleverd, maar echt goed resultaat geeft dit niet. Voor beter resultaat naar je gewone TV is het beter om een gewonen RGB-scart aan te schaffen. Tegenwoordig zijn bijna alle moderne 'ouderwetse' TV uitgerust met een RGB-scart aansluiting. Sla je handleiding van je TV er op na of dit ook voor jou TV geldt. • Dus wat is dan de beste manier om je PS3 aan te sluiten? In aflopende volgorde: 1. HDMI kabel, 2. Component Kabel, 3. scart kabel, 4. Composiet kabel. Let wel op dat je voor optie 1. en 2. een HDTV moet hebben. Indien je nog een 'ouderwetse' TV hebt, is optie 3 van toepassing. Indien je TV alleen beschikking heeft voor optie 4, houdt er dan rekening mee dat de kwaliteit niet spetterend is. Sla de handleiding van je TV er op na wat voor jou van toepassing is. Probeer bij een HDTV altijd te gaan voor de HDMI aansluiting, en probeer voor een gewone TV altijd te gaan voor via de RGB-scart aansluiting. • Zit er nou een HDMI kabel bij de PS3? Neen. Het beste kun je even rond kijken, maar onthoud: zo'n kabel mag niet meer kosten dan e20,- voor 2 meter. Bij de MM zijn deze kabels e50,- (op accessoires wordt altijd de winst gemaakt). Dus een bezoek aan je lokale elektro shop is helemaal nog niet zo'n gek idee. • Ik zie alleen maar een digitale uitgang voor geluid, maar kan ik ook gewoon nog stereo-out (RCA) krijgen? Jazeker! Stereo geluid is te krijgen door de AV-OUT kabel te gebruiken, die heeft naast composiet (de gele tulip) uitgang, ook stereo uitgang, de een rode en een witte tulp stekkers. De composiet uitgang moet je niet gebruiken, maar de stereo uitgang kun je aan je versterker aansluiten. Je bent nog niet klaar. Met de PS3 is het niet mogelijk om geluid zowel via de HDMI, Optische uitgang, of stereo uitgang af te spelen. Je moet namelijk expliciet de optie stereo uitgang kiezen in het XMB menu (Instellingen -> Geluids Instellingen). • Is het mogelijk om mijn PS3 aan een LCD monitor aan te sluiten? Ja dat kan! Maar je monitor moet wel overweg kunnen met het HDCP protocol. Dit protocol is verantwoordelijk voor het maken van een beveiligde verbinding tussen de monitor en de PS3. Alle HDTV's kunnen overweg met dit protocol (zonder deze ondersteuning mogen ze niet eens HDTV heten!), maar dit geldt niet voor alle LCD monitoren. Naast het feit dat je monitor HDCP moet ondersteunen heb je vaak ook nog een stekker nodig die van een HDMI aansluiting een DVI aansluiting maakt. Het enige verschil tussen DVI en HDMI is dat met HDMI geluid wordt verstuurd. • Ik wil graag iets uit de PSN Store kopen, maar ik wil absoluut geen creditkaart nemen. Is het mogelijk om zonder creditkaart iets uit de PSN Store te kopen? Sony komt binnenkort met pre-paid kaarten waarmee uit de Store spullen aangeschaft kunnen worden. Het is alleen nog niet bekend wanneer de pre-paid kaarten in de winkel te koop zijn. Wil je toch nog aankopen doen uit de Store, dan kun je met Wirecard een virtuele prepaid creditcard nemen. Je stort dan geld op je virtuele credit card en je kunt je credit kaart wereldwijd gebruiken alsof het een echte creditcard is. Deze dienst is tot stand gebracht door de Duitse bank en Mastercard. Let op: er wordt door verschillende gebruikers aangegeven dat dit niet meer werkt. • Mijn PS3 weigert zich aan te melden op het PSN netwerk. Wat is er aan de hand? Ook Sony moet af en toe haar netwerk onderhouden. Deze onderhoudsbeurten worden echter niet aangekondigd. Om te achterhalen of het werkelijk je PS3 is, of dat Sony bezig is met onderhouden, dan kun je naar deze pagina http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network toe waarop je de actuele status van het PSN netwerk kunt bekijken. • Wanneer wordt de PSN Store geupdate? Er wat wordt er zoal geupdate? De Europese PSN Store wordt rond het avonduur op donderdag ververst met extra content. PSN Store updates bestaan uit game demo's, game/movie/Blu-ray trailers in gewoon TV en HDTV formaat, wallpapers, extra game content, screensavers, gimmicks, etc. Geruchten zijn dat in de toekomst het ook mogelijk is om muziek, series en films te huren. • Kan ik met de PS3 ook TV kijken? Nog niet. Sony heeft tijdens de Leipzig beurs de PlayTV aangekondigd. Een vernuftig apparaatje die 2 decoders aan boord heeft waarmee je TV op je PS3 kan kijken en ook nog eens tegelijk een ander programma kan opnemen. Ook is het mogelijk om het programma te 'pauzeren'. Het apparaat werkt via het DVB-T protocol, vergelijkbaar met Digitenne of KPN Digitale TV. Als klap op de vuurpijl ondersteund PlayTV ook 1080p formaat, waarmee dus ook HDTV opgenomen kan worden! Helaas is het apparaat nog niet voor Nederland aangekondigd. De grote vraag is of dit op kort termijn nog gaat gebeuren, want Digitenne/KPN TV zend de programma's niet free-to-air en dit is natuurlijk een vereiste voor PlayTV. Helaas. Maar zodra het kan, lees je het als eerst hier. • Hoe zorg ik ervoor dat de PS3 mijn media bestanden herkend op mijn portable schijf? Allereerst moet je schijf FAT32 geformatteerd zijn. Als je dat eenmaal voor elkaar hebt, zijn er twee mogelijkheden: 1) Om de PS3 te forceren om de bestanden te vinden moet je een map PS3 maken en daarin de volgende mappen aanmaken: MUSIC, VIDEO en PHOTO. Zorg er daarna dan voor dat je respectivelijk je muziek, films en foto's in de juiste mappen plaatst. Als je daarna je portable schijf aan je PS3 verbind zal deze automatisch je bestanden in de juiste cattegorie rangschikken. 2) Om je portable schijf te verkennen zonder je bestanden in de juiste mappen te plaatsen, kun je altijd driehoekje in drukken. De PS3 toont dan alle bestanden. Het is dan aan jou om onderscheid te maken tussen muziek, films en foto's. • Mijn PS3 is op een andere HDTV aangesloten geweest en laat nu alleen maar zwart beeld zien? Zonder al te veel moeite kun je je beeldscherm instellingen van je PS3 resetten. Het enige wat je hoeft te doen is je PS3 uitschakelen en daarna inschakken via de powerknop en deze ingedrukt houden. Je PS3 zal dan 480p modus springen die door iedere TV herkend wordt. • Hoe weet ik hoeveel sap er nog in mijn controller zit? Pak je controller en houdt de PS knop ingedrukt totdat er een status menu op het scherm verschijnt. In dit status menu staat ook een batterij indicator van de controller die je nu gebruikt. • Ik heb weleens gelezen dat je een ander besturingsysteem op de PS3 kan zetten? Dat klopt. Op de PS3 kun je Linux installeren zodat de PS3 een volwaardige PC wordt. Snelheden die je met Linux op de PS3 kan verwachten zijn gelijk als een PowerPC die op 3.2Ghz lopen. De Linux distributies die je op dit moment kan installeren zijn: Ubuntu, Fedora 8, Gentoo, Debian, and Yellow Dog. • €80,- voor Unchared: Drake's Fortune vind ik te duur, is er een mogelijkheid om spellen te importeren? Ja! De games van de PS3 zijn regio onafhankelijk wat er op neer komt dat games waar ze ook gekocht zijn (New York, Tokio, Bombay), het altijd op je PS3 doen. Dit biedt voor ons Tweakers perspectieven, want dit betekent dat je games dus kunt importeren. De bekende besteladressen zijn www.renchi.com, www.videogamesplus.ca, www.estarland.com, www.gamehubs.com en de ebay-stores van 3busymen en biz-com2. Gisteren op de bonus round van gametrailers.com gezien waar deze quote van Michael Pachter vandaan komt. De beste man zegt dus alleen maar dat EA economische redenen zou kunnen hebben om hem eventueel uit te stellen. Tja, en dan heb je ergens een siteje die lezers nodig heeft en die probeert dat uit zijn verband te rukken en er iets smeuïgs van te maken. Gelukt.
